I’d like to think this is what I’m doing in my own industry. I pull insights from neuroscience, play and game theory, child development, teaching and learning, facilitation, and many other disciplines to create ways to help teams work better together. It’s not just about improving processes; it’s about unlocking the magic that happens when collaboration, creativity, and human connection come together. Because when people truly work better together, they don’t just transform their organizations—they transform lives. I heard someone refer to combat sports as the "fight game," and it got me thinking. The world of combat sports is often described as the "fight game," but there's a distinct difference when you step into the "fight business." The fight game isn't really a game. There is the thrill of competition, the dedication to training, and the glory of victory. But it is dangerous, and athletes pour their hearts and souls into the sport, driven by passion and the desire to be the best. For me though, transitioning to the idea of the fight business requires a different mindset. It's about strategic planning, brand partnerships, and leveraging media platforms to maximize reach and profitability. Fighters must learn to market themselves, engage with fans, and build a brand beyond the octagon or ring. While combat sports focus on athletic excellence, it is a business that demands an entrepreneurial spirit. Athletes need to think like businesspeople, understanding the importance of sponsorships, media appearances, and networking to create lasting success. Ultimately, mastering the fight business is about securing a future beyond the fight game, ensuring that fighters succeed in the ring and thrive outside of it. Sports has always been a big part of my life - some of my first/fondest memories are being involved in sports - I was fortunate enough to play baseball 4 years in college - I had a front row seat/worked for an NFL franchise for over 20 years. First hand experience with what it takes to operate at a high level across all departments and with high level athletes - Also spent time in the sports business space learning about things like marketing, sponsorships, sales and more! However there is opportunity for sponsorships to work so much harder than pure media value and start turning fans into customers for sponsors. For example, fans are 70% more likely to take action to a direct brand ad after engaging with organic content. What if teams used their social audience as an asset and enabled their sponsors to retarget fans who engage with social content which includes their branding. So for example Ford could retarget fans with a promotional offer to drive traffic to local dealerships not just get brand awareness. Helping 20 football players reach the top 5 leagues in the next 5 years. One of the things I do in my initial conversations with players is to create their vision – the game they want to play in their life and career, something that truly inspires them. A thought that really motivates me is the idea of working with players in the best leagues. My experience, though, is that it's not just something that happens. I thought, "If I can't sign Premier League players, then I have to create them myself." Then I started thinking about what game could I play that would really inspire me, and I came up with helping 20 players play in the top 5 leagues within the next 5 years. Then the thoughts of reason and limitation popped up: “Ah, that is impossible. I should probably be more reasonable. What about 10 or just 5 instead of 20?” Have you ever had that kind of voice in your head before? Pretty quickly, I shook those thoughts off because I don’t want what is reasonable. I don’t want “yeah, this is probably realistic.” I want to play a game, have a vision that really inspires me and motivates me, and helps me keep going in the face of setbacks. I want to throw myself into something that I perceive as more or less impossible and see what happens, what I learn, and most importantly, who I become in the process.
