Really good piece this on the lurking challenges for the technology that everyone’s talking about but many people don’t know what to do with. There’s about to be a huge bloodbath for VC-backed lightweight LLM wrappers. But also big questions for OpenAI’s business models. An Enterprise model for ChatGPT might be a thing, but that interface isn’t great for everyone and a lot of the value already freely exists in Bing.

Mira Murati, the former CTO of OpenAI, is reportedly gearing up to launch her own AI startup. Following her unexpected departure in September 2024, I’ve been curious about why she left, and it seems she’s now seeking over $100 million in venture capital to develop proprietary AI models. Given her leadership on major projects like ChatGPT and DALL-E, I doubt raising that capital will be an issue—her reputation speaks for itself. There’s speculation about whether she’ll take on the CEO role for this new venture. This move mirrors a larger trend of prominent AI figures branching out to pursue independent projects. It’ll be interesting to see how Murati’s new company shapes the AI landscape in the months ahead. Interestingly, Bloomberg featured Murati in a video last year where she discussed her work at OpenAI, including the development of ChatGPT. If you want to learn more about her work at OpenAI, check out this insightful interview on Bloomberg’s The Circuit with Emily Chang, where they explore her role and vision for AI. It offers a deep dive into how she helped shape OpenAI’s major breakthroughs. You can watch the full interview on YouTube https://lnkd.in/ePwrUvUi

Speaking of the biggest VC round in history ( remind, if you missed: OpenAI, the team behind ChatGPT, raised $6.6B at a post-money valuation of $157B). I have one question: how (and when) will OpenAI start generating returns for investors? For now, profits seem far off on the horizon. According to The Times, the company is expected to lose $5 billion this year alone. The Information reports that training costs could soar to $3 billion, while another $4 billion is being spent just to keep ChatGPT running. With burn rates like that, some are predicting OpenAI will need another cash infusion soon to keep up with the massive costs of building cutting-edge AI. What do you think?

OpenAI just skyrocketed its value to $80 billion. Thanks to a strategic play with Thrive Capital, OpenAI's crew is cashing in, marking a jump from last year's $29 billion. This isn't just growth; it's a seismic shift. Remember the buzz around ChatGPT in November 2022? That was OpenAI grabbing the spotlight. With Sam Altman steering, they've banked over $1.6 billion in 2023. Backing this titan is Microsoft, with a $10 billion vote of confidence, fueling OpenAI to push the envelope further. And with Sora that is now turning text into video, it feels like OpenAI isn't stopping at innovation, they're leading it and redefining the AI landscape always with an eye on what's next. PS. If you're as obsessed with AI and business as I am, let's connect! Drop me a message and let's geek out together.

Here's a revised version for clarity and grammar: On October 2023, ChatGPT 3.5 was released to the world. Just over a year later, billions—no, trillions—of dollars are being heaved at anything remotely related to artificial intelligence. And governments worldwide are frantically debating how to either slow down its advancement for global safety or fuel it to become the dominant country with the all-powerful self-aware #AGI. Or as my mother used to say, 'confusion reigned supreme and everyone got wet.' So, where are we in the realm of artificial intelligence? This quick corporate overview brings us up to date for May 2024. Thank you, Evan Armstrong."

Level 1 of AI Development: Hop in to ChatGPT or Claude, ask it for a component. Level 2: GitHub Copilot autocompletions Level 3: Chat Integrated into your IDE, like with Cursor or Avante, where you can say: "make X component like Y component, keep the styling, but do A, B, C differently, here's the schema for Y model: ..." And we're just getting started. What's level 4?

Given competition between LLM makers, this seems like a smart adoption strategy : https://lnkd.in/gyHfiUk8 And given my enthusiasm for ensemble models, the killer app for the "suite" may be the "committee of AI's" architecture for all kinds of problems- you get a committee with Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude all weighing in, debating and voting on a final suggestion. Poses an interesting challenge to MS which is trying to get corporates to adopt CoPilot.

7moTo me it has always been obvious that narrow AI applications will be the future. Which will hopefully lead to a more diversified landscape of AI companies - especially when they have to licence their training data and so can’t sensibly pursue the “one AI which does everything” fantasy.
