This isn't about selling TV's. It's about Walmart's investment into retail media and competing with Amazon's Amazon Prime TV. This gives Walmart another (profitable) media channel they can offer their advertisers/CPGs.

It continues to perplex me how the much of press around the Walmart / VIZIO deal is focused on Vizio’s size and place in the deal. Vizio sales are a rounding error on the beast of Bentonville’s books (less than 1%), shouldn’t there be more focus on the bigger fish? Just my HO, with 20 years of conference rooms behind it, many many off sites, quarterly business reviews, etc etc behind it #streamingwars #retailmedia #mergersandacquisition The Wall Street Journal https://lnkd.in/g3a5uyQp

Walmart's move to acquire Vizio is a calculated chess move in the retail media arena, merging data, inventory, and attribution to create a marketer's dream. With eyes on shoppable TV and attribution, Walmart aims to challenge Amazon's dominance in both retail and advertising. While advertising currently accounts for less than 2% of Walmart's revenue, this acquisition signals a shift towards a more aggressive advertising strategy.
What will Walmart's acquisition of Vizio mean for their ad business? 🧐 Today we asked our EVP, Megan Conahan, exactly that. Tune in below to our expert's insights! ⬇

Walmart has confirmed the acquisition of Vizio Holding Corp. for $2.3 billion, marking a strategic move to enhance its presence in the entertainment and media sectors. The purchase, at $11.50 per share, aims to leverage Vizio’s SmartCast Operating System to offer innovative TV and in-home entertainment experiences. Seth Dallaire, EVP of Walmart U.S., expressed enthusiasm for Vizio’s customer-centric approach and profitable advertising potential, highlighting synergies with Walmart Connect’s retail media business. Vizio’s CEO, William Wang, sees the acquisition as a pivotal moment, aligning with Vizio’s mission while unlocking value for shareholders. Analysts anticipate the deal strengthening Walmart’s competitive edge, particularly in the consumer electronics market, and enhancing its supply chain and direct-to-consumer capabilities. With Walmart Connect’s growth and expansive customer reach, the acquisition signals Walmart’s commitment to redefining the retail-entertainment intersection and solidifying its position as a retail industry leader. 📺 Why I think Walmart is stepping into the future in Offline & #CTV / #OTT Data in VIZIO buyout…💰🤔 🎉Ars Technica article this week in the retail-tech space absolutely caught my eye! Why…for several reasons but let me tell you a story. 📚 🏬 When I first saw Walmart’s acquisition of Vizio I knew this isn’t just a business revenue or growth move; it’s a bold step into the future of #Data. Not just the latest in data but a future that’s sure to come where personalized shopping and advertising. I have a name for this called the “Phygital” landscape. (Ya, I know not a great name) I’ll keep working on it. - But the idea remains the same, our Physical shopping behaviors and Online data and identify are one in the same and the journey isn’t one or the other - it’s both. 💻🙋♀️🙋♂️ 🤔Imagine walking through Walmart, picking up your favorite snacks and gadgets, and then seeing ads for those very products or similar ones on your TV at home. That’s where we’re headed. By integrating Vizio’s smart TV tech with Walmart’s rich in-store shopper data, we’re looking at a future where your shopping experience is seamlessly connected, from store to screen.📺🏬 🙌This isn’t just about smarter ads; it’s about creating a shopping experience that’s tailored to each of us, making our lives easier and maybe even a bit more exciting. It’s a testament to how data and technology can work together to understand our needs better.🎂🧘🌐 I’m all for innovation that brings us closer to what we love while respecting our choices and privacy. What do you think?❓ However for me; this will need to be done in a privacy consented way, and there’s a way to do it, and the future is here…🌐 Are we ready for this next level of personalized shopping with the “Phygital” data advertising motion? 🤔 #Innovation #RetailTech #Personalization #SmartShopping #WalmartVizio #firstpartydata #dataprivacy Share: Rowena Lam Mindy Buckalew Jesse McCambridge Steve Pruett Brian Pasch, MA Josh Axler, CFA Bob Lanham Gary Walter Joseph Reid Brice Englert Ross Adams Ashley Reckmeyer Phil Sura Allison Schiff Tammy Henault Andrea Zapata Derrick Horner Shari Levitin Neil Sweeney Eli Heath Manoj Ramnani Andrew Gonzales Mark Ailsworth Cedric Peillet https://lnkd.in/eMH533hU

🚀 Building the Future of TV Ecosystems is all about creating media environments that connect content, consumers, and brands. However, not many truly understand the value creation at every step of the process. The real Golden Grail lies in adding value for consumers, brands, and TV broadcasters. 💡 The next big thing? It’s all about collecting and transforming information into actionable data—starting from TV viewer to user, user to buyer, and back to buyer to viewer. 🎯 Insbuy App is completely changing the advertising paradigm—from push to pull, from imposing to inspiring, and from linear to on-demand. 📊 Did you know? A whopping 88% of TV viewers use a second screen while watching TV, and 71% search for information related to the content they're watching. On top of that, 35% of TV viewers have made purchases based on TV shows or commercials. #MediaEcosystem #FutureOfTV #SecondScreen #DigitalInnovation #ValueCreation

Earlier this year, Walmart’s acquisition of Vizio was sending ripples through both the TV and Retail industry as it showed that TV is no longer just about entertainment—it’s (again) about shopping. But should we be surprised? TV has always been a tool to sell, from early commercials, soap operas to shopping channels. Now, with connected TV technology, the line between watching and buying is disappearing. 💡 Retailer + TV Interface = Data Goldmine 💡 Walmart’s move isn’t just about screens—it’s about data. With Vizio, they’ll know what you watch, when you watch it, and how long you stay tuned. This treasure trove of information will transform TV into a powerful retail tool, making it easier to shop straight from your couch. 🎯 Turn TV into a Retail Powerhouse 🎯 We all look for ways to monetize content and hence, one way to do so is in blending entertainment and shopping. When you partner with retailers to create content that not only captivates but also drives sales, you can earn money with your content. But if you’re not thinking data-first, you’re already behind. 📺 Shoppable TV and Media Communities: The Next Big Thing 📺 With technologies like Automated Content Recognition (ACR), your screen is now a storefront. Walmart’s $2.3 billion investment in Vizio highlights the importance of this shift. Other retailers will jump in—whether by launching their own streaming service or tapping into shoppable content. 🌟 Build the Future of TV Ecosystems🌟 The future of TV isn’t just about streaming; it’s about creating media ecosystems that connect content, consumers, and brands. At Global Media Consult, we have the know-how to help you thrive in this new landscape. Imagine: 📲 Smart TVs that recognize products on screen and let you buy them instantly 🖇 Loyalty programs that offer exclusive streaming content 🛒 Niche communities built around shared interests, with shoppable content at their core The metaverse might be the future, but the Shoppable TV revolution is happening now. #TV #Retail #Data #Streaming #FutureofTV #ShoppableContent #Innovation #Media
