Just back from a field visit to Borneo, where I experienced first hand the impact of working with sustainable palm oil plantations that are making a difference, saw inspiring initiatives that support biodiversity on the ground and worked with like minded partners that are committed to driving positive change and education around sustainable palm oil. Together we are stronger and can make a difference. Ferrero Chester Zoo Coop Thankyou Catherine Barton Corinne Bailey Hannah Wright Cat Humes Alastair Pattrick Robert Heywood Marc Ancrenaz
Why did the elephant cross the river? Turns out it really is to get to the other side 🐘 This week I had the absolute pleasure of taking a group of Chester Zoo staff and corporate partners Ferrero and Co-op out to the Kinabatangan Malaysian Borneo to visit field partners Hutan. We had the joy of witnessing 40+ Bornean elephants cross the Kinabatangan river together, moving from one patch of habitat to another. This subspecies has recently been classified as Endangered by the IUCN and the magnitude of witnessing this did not pass us by. The landscape in this region is fragmented, and the work going on here is empowering local communities to manage and protect wildlife. This involves stakeholders such as the oil palm industry, and our trip included visiting plantations and witnessing the fantastic work and the challenges that arise in creating a sustainable palm oil movement. None of this can be done without collaboration. This movement is vital, and we partner with Ferrero on education and our sustainable palm oil communities project. At the other end of the supply chain, through our work with Co-op we support reforestation and biodiversity monitoring in a wildlife corridor. This trip left me with so much hope that, with all of our combined voices, skills, passion and determination, we can continue to make strides forward in this global sector 🌏 …and I hope more people get to see the joy of an elephant crossing the river to get to the other side 🐘 Corinne Bailey Hannah Wright Cat Humes Alastair Pattrick Robert Heywood Charlie Cayton Marc Ancrenaz Amanda Shia

What an amazing experience and what great work 👏🏻
Such a great cause Charlie. I was lucky enough to go to Kinabatangan River earlier this year but we didn't get to see any elephants. The impact of palm oil is so obvious on the Borneo landscape. Its great to hear that these initiatives exist and, with business support, careful management and wider education I really hope that the future for these truly beautiful places is sustainably positive.
