The key relationship in a nonprofit organization is that of the Executive Director and Board Chair. It's important to be deliberate and intentional about setting up this partnership! Their roles are different, so let's go over 3 important things you should know about board chairs: 1️⃣ Clarity in Roles: The executive's role and the board chair's role, are different. But those two should come together for the good of the organization, and for leadership. The board chair and the executive are the leaders of the organization. 2️⃣ Clear Job Description for the Board Chair: If you don't have a clear job description, work with the board chair to agree on what that is. And don't use a boilerplate board description. 3️⃣ Leadership in the Board Chair Role: The board chair needs to lead the board for a few reasons, but the biggest one is because they're the peer of the board. This partnership can make or break your organization. But it's not just about roles. Mutual respect, trust, and open communication are vital, so make time for weekly touch bases to keep the partnership thriving. So there you have it—three key things to know about board chairs! Whether you’re new to the role or just want to get the most out of working with a board chair, understanding their leadership style, strategic vision, and collaborative skills can make a big difference.
