The Israeli Startup Developing Super-Fast AI Performing Processors Raised $5 Million COGNIFIBER, an Israeli startup, that develops photonic computing technology for AI closed a $5 million funding round. The funding round was led by Chartered Group and Eastern Epic Capital. The new funding will support the completion of the photonic processors and supercomputer development. The company, which currently employs 13 people, is developing DeepLight, a new class of photonic processors. These programmable and trainable processors utilize multi-core optical fibers to process data at the speed of light as it travels through the fiber. The processing speed is up to 1,000 times more than NVIDIA's 100A processor, with an energy consumption of only 180 watts. CogniFiber was founded in 2018 by Dr. Eyal Cohen, PhD and Professor Zeev Zalevsky. In total, the startup raised a total of $14 million, including funding from the Israel Innovation Authority רשות החדשנות. Source: https://lnkd.in/dEMxh7xv

91 startups raise $2.6 billion, with big rounds for AI chips. By Jesse Allen. AI drew more investors to the chip industry in Q2. Four AI-focused chip startups receiving rounds of more than $100 million, targeting data center ASICs for transformers, highly flexible platforms for the embedded edge, dataflow processors, and mixed-signal neuromorphic chips. In-memory computing also helped boost AI, with three companies either incorporating it into their chips or providing specialized IP. Ways to connect chiplets, chips, and server racks was another area of activity, with Germany pumping more than $200 million into a graphene-based co-integrated optics system for massively parallel connectivity. Other optical interconnect approaches drew attention, as well, along with a way to make ultra-high density interconnects using liquid metal ink. https://lnkd.in/g2eY6g53 #semiconductor #AIhardware #startups #startupfunding #venturecapital TXOne Networks Black Semiconductor PsiQuantum Rivos Inc. Exciting update for the tech and AI community! Lightmatter, a Boston-based startup using light to amplify the interconnectivity of chips powering deep learning in artificial intelligence, today raised $400 million in its Series D financing round. T. Rowe Price, a new investor in the round, brings the company's valuation to $4.4 billion, more than four times its valuation of $1.2 billion in December. Prior investors GV and Fidelity Management and Research Co. also participated in this round. As significant tech players are investing heavily in AI data centers, Lightmatter brings an answer to the energy consumption and scalability issues that have been plaguing these facilities. Firm relies on silicon photonics technology to accelerate processes, making it one of the promising solutions for future computing. Though the use of light in computing is not a new concept, the problem of devising effective photonic components had been seen as historically challenging. This is its largest round to date with $400 million, although it is by no means its first significant raise. The company raised $154 million in May 2023 and followed that up in December. Founded in 2017, Lightmatter has now attracted a total of $850 million. Co-founder and CEO Nick Harris said that this Series D could be the company's final round of private funding. Lightmatter isn't the sole photonic startup that had many in the investment world taking notice this week. Another company leveraging photonics to enhance AI data center efficiency, Xscape Photonics of New York, also did a massive raise. This startup raised $44 million in a Series A round led by IAG Capital Partners but other notable players also invested in this round that includes Cisco Investments and Nvidia. As growing demands for an AI datacenter keep arising, Xscape Photonics aims to tackle similar energy performance, and scaling challenges arising from these demands. https://lnkd.in/fzpnPPW #photonics #ai #energyefficiency #techinnovation #emergingtech #startupfunding #venturecapital #energysustainability #aiinnovation #techindustry #businessnews #investintech #techupdates #technews #innovation #deeplearning #startup #funding Lightmatter

Nearly two years ago, the semiconductor industry gained significant attention due to the transformative potential of generative AI and the powerful chips driving it. Nvidia has been the main beneficiary, but several startups are challenging its dominance or exploring other disruptive opportunities. Despite high risks and costs, semiconductor startups could benefit from an expected 20 percent industry growth this year, driven by strong AI chip demand. This creates opportunities for AI chip startups like Kneron, Cerebras Systems, and Hailo to capture some of this projected growth. Kneron CEO 劉峻誠Albert Liu mentioned that the latest low-power KL-830 NPU significantly improves Edge AI performance. #ai #generativeai #npu #lowpower
