Should countries control their AI futures? In the summer issue of Horizons from the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD) I outline the growing movement around sovereign AI. Motivations range from from avoiding large-scale disinformation attacks on democratic institutions to efforts to ameliorate AI-driven job loss. What are the critical factors driving sovereign AI development? What are the policy actions being taken to support it? What are the resource requirements? Investing billions into sovereign AI might result in going in the wrong direction given how rapidly the technology is evolving. What are the alternatives? The article linked below summarizes a white paper on the topic we will be releasing later this fall out of the Trusted AI Alliance at Imperial College London. Chris Kraft, provides a valuable take on explainability, a topic that always pops up in AI and ML-based analysis tools. I especially appreciate the approach (in the Document): Even if we have a black-box condition, what can we add/do to increase the result's interpretability?

We cannot overstate the significance of Responsible AI. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes deeply integrated into our daily lives, from enhancing our work to personalising our entertainment, ensuring its use is ethical and beneficial is crucial. Responsible AI focuses on creating AI systems that are fair, transparent, and accountable, prioritising the welfare of all individuals and the environment. Why is this so important, you might ask? Firstly, it ensures that AI technologies assist decisions without bias, promoting fairness and equality. Secondly, advocating transparency allows us to understand how AI derives its results, fostering trust. Lastly, accountability ensures those deploying AI can be held responsible for its impact, ensuring AI benefits society. Embracing Responsible AI is not just about preventing harm; it's about steering the development of AI technologies to maximise their potential for positive impact while minimising risks. As we move forward, understanding and advocating for Responsible AI will be essential for creating a future where technology advances hand in hand with ethical considerations, ensuring a better world for all.
