Do you know what sunk the vessel, Felicity Ace, and over $400 million worth of cargo along with it? It wasn’t a reef in Samoa... It was a car battery. As hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) gain popularity, the lithium-ion batteries they use increasingly impact shipping safety, and are being linked to a rise in onboard fires. When a fire breaks out on a ship, controlling it becomes nearly impossible, making loss prevention a top priority for shipping lines. Recently, our fully qualified EV mechanic, Uncle, dedicated an hour at Jacanna Customs and Freight to conduct crucial pre-shipping safety checks of the hybrid-systems in vehicles set to sail. Our MITO apprentice, Shawn, eagerly shadowed Uncle, realising that a mechanic's career can extend beyond the workshop as demand for qualified technical expertise in the shipping industry grows with the rising popularity of these vehicles. 👉 For more information about preventing the risk of car battery fires in shipping https://lnkd.in/dFVbQqpj

This is Mark Cullen receiving his 5 year long service award from his supervisor Gary Wolff and eagerly cheered on by HGV mechanics Duncan, Jerry, Ollie and Derek. While Mark is celebrating his 5 year anniversary, he has been familiar with the Gregory Group for much longer having joined the team 21 years ago. A brief stint elsewhere, he then returned to the team in 2019. We asked him about his career and here is what he said: How did your career begin? I wanted to be an electrician but an opportunity to become a mechanic came along. I started with cars and moved on to static plant, and then HGVs. Thankfully I really enjoy my job so I think it was the right career for me! What do you enjoy about working at Gregory Group? The people I work with. From colleagues in the workshop to the admin team next door - we are a like-minded bunch who enjoy our working life. What changes have you seen during your time? The greatest change is the modernisation of vehicles, specifically the addition of electric vehicles. With the future of HVO and possibly full electric, I am sure I will see more changes before my retirement. With a 40 year history as a mechanic, what advice would you give to anyone else considering this as a career? Don't do it if you don't like getting dirty! But if you don't mind that, go for it. It's an opportunity to grow from car mechanic to HGV. Plus you get to use bigger hammers! #EmployeeSpotlight #OurPeople #WorkAnniversaries #DeliveringWinners

Here's a possible scenario for a significant moment on your first day as a mechanic apprentice: *The Moment:* My first day as a mechanic apprentice was a whirlwind of emotions. I arrived at the garage, dressed in my crisp new uniform, eager to learn. My supervisor, engineer Azeez, greeted me with a firm handshake. "Welcome aboard! You're going to learn a lot here. Let's get started." Mr Azeez introduced me to the team, and we began with a tour of the garage. As we walked, he explained the different stations and machinery. *The Challenge:* We stopped at a raised Hyundai Elantra, its engine exposed. Mr Azeez handed me a socket wrench. "Okay, kid. Show me you can remove this oil pan." My heart sank. I had studied theory, but hands-on experience was limited. I fumbled with the wrench, struggling to loosen the bolts. *The Breakthrough:* Mr Azeez stepped in, guiding my hands. "Feel the torque? You need to apply steady pressure." With his guidance, the bolt loosened. I beamed with pride. *The Lesson:* Mr Azeez smiled. "It's not just about fixing cars; it's about problem-solving. Think critically, stay calm, and never be afraid to ask." That moment taught me: 1. The value of hands-on learning. 2. Importance of mentorship. 3. Overcoming self-doubt. *Reflection:* That first day set the tone for my apprenticeship. I realized: 1. I was capable of learning complex skills. 2. Collaboration was key. 3. Perseverance would carry me through tough times. That moment sparked a passion within me, and I knew I was on the right path. Would you like me to: 1. Modify this scenario. 2. Generate a new one. 3. Add specific details (e.g., location, vehicle make).
