Unreasonable and unearned payments to employment service providers is just the latest symptom of a broken system. With skewed incentives, it's no wonder our employment system is failing to match jobseekers with the countless sectors that are crying out for workers. Our outsourced, hands-off approach to employment services has become a box-ticking exercise that no longer supports jobseekers, employers or their communities. Our joint submission with the Brotherhood of St Laurence and the University of Melbourne outlines why we need a system that actually connects with local communities to deliver better outcomes for those who face barriers to employment. The rise of gig work in Canada post-pandemic continues unabated with more than a quarter of Canadians saying they perform work linked to some form of digital platform. I was pleased to have been interviewed by Meagan Gillmore of Canadian Affairs on the subject of gig work in Canada, recent increased legislative protections and what the future of employment regulation of gig work in Canada may look like. #gigwork #employmentlaw #employmentstandards

There appears to be a concerning issue plaguing the employment services sector in Australia: the payment of millions of dollars to job providers for positions that jobseekers secure independently. It highlights instances where individuals have found employment on their own, only to face pressure from providers to disclose information for monetary gain. This practice not only raises ethical concerns but also questions the efficacy and necessity of such intermediaries in the job-seeking process. Jobseekers, like Nathan and Jessica, are coerced into providing details of their employment, facing consequences if they refuse, such as the withholding of final payments or fabricated claims of missed appointments. The system, as it stands, seems to prioritize the financial interests of providers over the genuine needs of jobseekers. It's a flawed structure that perpetuates a cycle of dependency rather than empowerment. Moreover, it's disheartening to see the lack of accountability from both government bodies and peak industry representatives in addressing these issues. The Australian Unemployed Workers Union rightfully points out the failure of the government to safeguard the rights of vulnerable workers and to ensure that public funds are used judiciously. There's an urgent need for reform and greater transparency in the employment services sector to prevent exploitation and to truly support individuals in their job search journey. Is there a lesson to be learnt here for Singapore as it outsources its public career services centers? Share your thoughts! #EmploymentScam #JobSeekersRights 📢

Great coverage this morning from Mary McIninch of ACSESS (Association of Canadian Search, Employment & Staffing Services) on what employers need to know about Ontario's new requirements for recruiting and staffing firms. The changes take effect on July 1. It's a must-read overview of what these changes mean for temporary help agencies, recruiters, and their clients. https://lnkd.in/giwgrmnm #HR #Staffing #Recruitment

Interesting article below from Recruiter............... The UK's four leading recruitment bodies - ALP, APSCo, REC and TEAM; have come together to urge the government to protect the UK's temp market, amid potential legislative and regulatory changes. The letter to Jonathan Reynolds MD details how the sector (It supports over 1M workers daily) supports a flexible and adaptable workforce..... Highlighting the below; Temporary recruitment offers: * Pathways to employment * Economic resilience * Work-life balance and flexibility * Business adaptability, with flexibility “especially critical”, the letter says, in sectors like healthcare, logistics, agriculture, hospitality and education. “Overly restrictive measures risk destabilising the labour market potentially reducing flexibility, leading to higher unemployment, and lower economic growth,” the letter says. “Not all zero-hours contracts are exploitative, and not all flexibility is one-sided,” the letter’s signees close by saying. “Temporary agency work plays a crucial role in fostering a modern, adaptable workforce and is integral to the continued success of the UK economy.” TBC........ #temporaryrecruitment #recruitment #fortempeople https://lnkd.in/eUazp-Tm
