Last week, I was talking to a founder who’d just landed a meeting with his dream VC. Huge moment for him. But by the end of the call, I could feel his anxiety. Turns out, he had no idea if his financials were good enough. I’ve been hearing this from founders a lot lately. Since August, our sales calls have been filled with one question: “How do I get my financials ready for investors?” It’s become the big worry. At Fuel we helped hundreds of startups with their fundraising. Recently, many of them closed their series A fundraising. My LinkedIn feed over the last 6 months has been flooded by "alternatives to VC funding" - and a lot of the messaging has centred on how VCs suck, model is broken, it kills your company, you don't need it etc. etc. My feed has also been hit hard with VC marketing, and a lot of it is just that - VCs are great story-tellers. In my journey as a founder, selling into big enterprise customers - the first few deals were hard. Once the need was established, and buying committee was onboard, questions quickly turned to us being an early stage start-up... "so how much runway do you guys have?" "you want us to sign a 3 year contract, but will you even be around then?" This is where having strong VC support has made a HUGE difference. I want to call out Mark Ghermezian and MXV Capital for helping us get these deals over the line. On 4 occasions, offering up a "Speak to Mark at MXV" was sufficient to de-risk the deal. If VCs are adding value this way to their portcos, they should market it more. This is the stuff that matters disproportionately at an early stage!

It’s common for people to talk about the importance of founder-market fit. But what’s not discussed nearly enough is follow-on-investor fit. Yesterday at #FortuneBrainstormHealth, I brought this up during a session on where VCs are placing their bets in digital health, as I sat alongside fellow investors whom I would happily send my CEOs to for their next round of funding. As investors leading Series A and Series B rounds at Canvas Ventures, my partners and I spend significant time coaching our founders on who to take money from next. Choosing who sits at the table with you requires extensive diligence. Patient investors are key to building generational companies. There must be chemistry not just between the founder and the investors, but also the investors and the existing board members. I can tell you the best fit is almost never based on who is writing the biggest check. And as I’ve seen time and time again, the right fit makes every bit of difference in the trajectory of a company. Data driven relationships... Seems like a weird concept, but was the theme of our conversations last week at In Revenue Capital. First we had Cory Snyder on the pod, he shared how he leverages data and tools to help curate relationships between internal sales teams and partners. The ultimate goal of leveraging data in partnerships is to move from quantity (tons of partners in an ecosystem who are jus there) to quality (using data to understand what makes a good partner and enabling them). Next, Justin Gray went to the Scale Venture Partners GTM event hosted by the Bob Barker of B2B Craig Rosenberg. The theme, curated relationships and data driven insights.
