I get it now: Mathematical understanding is a mind unbound. To perceive Moduli space is to step outside of time and space. But then mathematics gives us the power to bind and constrain; to constrain the infinite in a way that is real and relevant through optimization. It is paradoxical that mathematics enables anything; including constraining anything. You must let go of everything you know, to truly understand how to shape your reality: #stepIntoAModuliStack #machineMetacognition #AI #philosophy #mathematics #universalObjectReference

Exploring Human Decision-Making Through the Ages! 🧠 I'm excited to share my recent work on how human decision-making has evolved from our ancestors to modern times. In my paper, I discuss the shift from normative to descriptive theories, highlighting the cognitive strategies we've developed to cope with increasingly complex decisions. Despite environmental pressures being less urgent today, we continue to face a high volume of choices. Many of these strategies, while sometimes limited and fallible, align with our cognitive economy and shed light on why we make decisions the way we do. Take a dive into this fascinating topic and explore how the evolution of our thinking has shaped human progress! #CognitiveScience #DecisionMaking #HumanEvolution #Research #AI #BehavioralScience

What if consciousness precedes compute? LLMs and the Curious Notion of Panprotopsychism 🔴 Panprotopsychism: a thought-provoking idea that consciousness, in some form, may be present in all things. 🔴 LLMs' complex architecture may give rise to proto-consciousness, albeit alien to human experience. 🔴 Interdisciplinary dialogue is crucial to explore the nature of consciousness in AI and human contexts. #AI #AGI #LLMs #consciousness #mind

NATURE 🧠 of CONSCIOUSNESS Physics of Emergent Phenomena Panpsychism and panprotopsychism are two philosophical theories that seek to explain the nature of consciousness and its relation to the physical world. Here is a brief comparison: #Panpsychism Definition: Panpsychism is the view that consciousness is a fundamental and ubiquitous aspect of the universe. According to panpsychism, all physical entities, no matter how small, possess some form of consciousness or experience. Key Points: 1. Ubiquity of Consciousness: Consciousness is present in all entities, from the smallest particles to the largest structures in the universe. 2. Intrinsic Nature: Consciousness is an intrinsic property of matter, meaning it is inherent in the very nature of physical entities. 3. Combination Problem: One of the major challenges for panpsychism is explaining how simple forms of consciousness combine to form the complex consciousness experienced by humans and other higher animals. #Panprotopsychism Definition: Panprotopsychism is a related but distinct theory suggesting that fundamental physical entities possess not consciousness itself, but the potential to give rise to consciousness. This potential is referred to as proto-consciousness or proto-mental properties. Key Points: 1. Potentiality: Unlike panpsychism, which posits that consciousness is already present in all entities, panprotopsychism posits that physical entities have properties that can give rise to consciousness under certain conditions. 2. Emergence: Consciousness emerges from the interaction and combination of these proto-conscious properties, but is not present at the fundamental level itself. 3. Explanatory Approach: Panprotopsychism aims to address the hard problem of consciousness (how and why physical processes give rise to subjective experience) by positing intermediate properties that bridge the gap between physical processes and conscious experience. Comparison - Presence of Consciousness: In panpsychism, consciousness is always present, even at the most fundamental levels. In panprotopsychism, consciousness is not present at the fundamental level but can emerge from proto-mental properties. - Fundamental Nature: Panpsychism treats consciousness as a fundamental property of matter, while panprotopsychism treats proto-conscious properties as fundamental, with consciousness emerging from them. - Complexity: Panpsychism must address how simple forms of consciousness combine to form complex experiences, while panprotopsychism focuses on how proto-conscious properties can give rise to consciousness. Both theories attempt to reconcile the existence of consciousness with a physicalist view of the universe, but they differ in how they conceptualize the relationship between physical processes and conscious experience. 〰️ #Intelligence #Consciousness

🚀 Just finished reading A Thousand Brains by Jeff Hawkins, and it’s a game changer! This book dives deep into the workings of the human brain and its implications for AI. It's split into three insightful parts that left me thinking about the future of both human and machine intelligence: Part 1: Explores the old and new brain — our natural, instinctive behaviors versus our neocortex, responsible for intellectual and rational thinking. He presents the fascinating concept that by reverse-engineering how the brain works, especially the neocortex, we can build a true machine intelligence. The key takeaway? Our understanding of the brain is crucial to unlocking the future of AI. Part 2: Current AI, while impressive, is not true intelligence. Hawkins argues that for machines to reach real intelligence, they need to learn and build models of the world like the neocortex does. AI isn’t just about data processing; it needs to understand the world, just as humans do, through experience and learning. Part 3: Perhaps the most thought-provoking, Hawkins highlights that our intelligence is both a strength and a threat. From the creation of atomic bombs to the environmental crisis, human intelligence might lead to the extinction of Homo sapiens. It's not just machine intelligence we should worry about — it's the ways in which our own intellect could turn against us. Attaching a photo of the book with my guitar 🎸, a reminder that some forms of human creativity and expression — like art — may never be fully replicated by machines. This book is a must-read for anyone curious about the intersection of neuroscience and AI! #AI #MachineIntelligence #Neuroscience #AThousandBrains #JeffHawkins #FutureOfAI #HumanCreativity #Innovation

What is human thought? What is consciousness? What is intelligence? Can the dynamics of human thought be replicated? These are the fundamental questions that the field of #ArtificialIntelligence has to grapple with. If you are interested in exploring these and other philosophical questions about evaluating how intelligence, consciousness, and thinking could apply to machines of our own making, I invite you to join me in taking Minds and Machines: A Philosophical Exploration of AI and Consciousness class at Stanford this summer. There are still seats available... https://lnkd.in/gHT-MW_M
