96% of content online gets ZERO clicks - a study from ahrefs which analysed 14 BILLION pages online Which is UP from 90% a few years ago Time and time again i see masses of content being produced for seo which either doesnt get clicks OR get clicks for the wrong reason A huge part of the SEO industry is mugging you off. And I say this lightly. It happens in every industry for sure, but we have a problem with lack of understanding of organic and earned media as a channel.
100% agree. The SEO industry is addicted to churning out content that does nothing. To paraphrase Howard Gossage..."people read what interests them and sometimes it's an ad". Most content in SEO is neither interesting or advertising.
Here are some questions: Even though most content doesn't get significant traffic, would the content that does get traffic get the traffic it does without it? So, does content do something collectively? (As in helping a brand establish topical authority.) Does organic traffic have a higher value? (For one of the websites I managed, organic traffic also had a significantly higher time on-site, which also translated to higher conversions than paid media.) Just some thoughts...
As a student learning about SEO, it’s surprising to see that 96% of content online gets zero clicks! It really shows how important it is to focus on quality and purpose in content, not just quantity. This also makes me think about how SEO is often misunderstood. Without a real strategy, it’s easy to end up with content that doesn’t reach the right people or achieve much.
Well now it costs almost nothing to throw a bunch of shit at the walk and see what sticks.
Sounds kind of logical to me since a page need to be on the first page in order to get some traffic.
This is only going to go up as AI tools make it easier to create large volumes of content…cut through is going to get harder and I can see that number going up to 99% pretty quick
OOH conversely reaches 95% of the UK population every week.
I think this is true about most of the internet. How many e-commerce stores make any sales, I suspect the vast number of Etsy sellers make virtually zero sales etc. looking at the internet is like trying to look at the world through a pinhole.
So are we saying that a lot of people are being conned?

1moAhrefs number are far from exact so even if it’s a high number, I would take it with a grain of salt. News magazines for example get tons of traffic from google news and ahrefs doesn’t cover that. Ahrefs only track around 3M keywords in Swedish and there is a LOT More that People search on. They dont cover all new longtails that People search for each day etc. But ofcourse, if the real number is around 80%, it’s still a lot of content that never gets read.
