Excited to kick off my #sustainability leadership journey! Today marks Day 1 of the one-year Chief Sustainability Officer program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Sustainability isn't just a passion – it's my driving force. I believe in the power of businesses to create positive change, and sustainable practices are essential for a better future.
Thrilled to dive into this program, learn from experts, and collaborate with fellow sustainability champions. Continuous learning is vital in today's world, where environmental challenges are urgent.

How can we measure sustainability performance in companies? True sustainability encompasses more than environmental stewardship; it involves positive impact on human lives. Sustainability is about making decisions that not only drive economic success but also demonstrate respect for each and every employee and generate value for all stakeholders. From our origins in humanistic leadership to our Institute for Sustainable Leadership (ISL), launched last year, we remain deeply convinced that business is a force for good.
This week marked a milestone for the ISL as our Munich Campus hosted an academic conference on "Corporate Carbon Emissions" organized by Prof. Gaizka Ormazabal while the first generation of ISL Fellows presented the results of sustainability projects they have been working on since October. The projects are an opportunity for IESE Business School students from the MBA, MiM and EMBA programs to work towards solutions for the most pressing global challenges by collaborating with companies and supporting research.
For me, a significant aspect of our ISL's contribution resides in our capacity to create forums for dialogue, collaboration and learning among business leaders and academic experts united by a common goal yet offering diverse viewpoints. The path of sustainability is one that must be traversed together, where the exchange of ideas and collaboration in driving initiatives is fundamental for addressing the challenges and opportunities we face today as a global society.

Dr Rosina Watson is helping to create a more sustainable future, client by client and student by student!
As Head of the Sustainable Business Group and Associate Professor of Sustainability, Rosina believes that rather than leading change within a single organisation, teaching at Cranfield allows her to have a far-reaching impact by influencing and equipping her students to drive sustainability in their various organisations.
In a recent article Rosina outlines the ‘five key competencies for sustainable leaders’, exploring the capabilities managers need to make a meaningful contribution to a more sustainable future, and what has been learned at Cranfield about teaching these competencies.
The five key competencies for sustainable leaders include:
• systems-thinking competence
• anticipatory competence
• normative competence
• strategic competence
• and interpersonal competence.
... interested in what this means, and what it means for your business?
You can read Rosina’s blog in the comments below.

This week, I enjoyed Leadership Capabilities for the 21st Century training at the University of Cambrigde Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Key discussions focused on the urgency of acting due to irreversible climate changes and how companies can support these efforts by embedding sustainability into their commercial agenda.
Please find some of my reflections below:
🛠️ Decarbonization is an imperative
👩🦰 Addressing climate gender inequality is critical
🏵️ Different type of leadership is required to combat climate change and deliver triple-bottom-line KPIs
🤩 Remember a quote from Albert Einstein „Insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results „
🍀 Open for new solutions „An impossibility is just the possibility you don’t understand yet”
🤔 Slow down and rethink to speed up your sustainability journey
