I am fascinated by the influence the built environment has on our behaviour and well-being at work so I was delighted to join a seminar organised by Dr Kerstin Sailer on #workplacewellbeing at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL with visitors from Soungmin Yu's lab at Yonsei University, sharing insights from occupational, health and environmental psychology from the work we have been doing with Clara Weber and Fehmidah Munir. There were so many ways we could accelerate our understanding and improve work and health outcomes through a multi-disciplinary approach. Thank you for an inspiring morning! Here are some great key take home learnings from researchers working in the built environment space.. 💬 Precision of Language in our Research: When reporting on the impact of work on health, could we better reflect the practical details of the workspace—floor plans, occupancy, quiet areas, and spaces to retreat—all crucial design features that have the potential to effect wellbeing and inclusion. 🔬 Challenges in Methodology: With so many variables in the design field x occupational and health psychology field we need to think carefully about what we measure and how we measure it. Innovative approaches combining sensors, wearables and traditional measures could help us better capture the nuances of workplace dynamics and individual needs. 🔎 Intentional Design: Our spaces should support interaction, psychological safety, and individual choice, rather than presenting barriers. ⚖️ Communicating the Trade-offs in Design: Many of our traditional design choices were made without fully considering diverse needs—like cooling systems optimized for male metabolisms or open plans that suit extraverts. Recognising and addressing these trade-offs is is essential for more equitable environments. 🌱 Indoor Environment Quality: Clean air is a priority given the expansive data that links poor quality with numerous health issues. Mindbogglingly I learnt that 90% of the world’s population still faces unhealthy air quality... a long way for us to go. The Centre for Liveable Cities and The Seoul Institute (SI) co-organised the Futureproofing Ageing Infrastructure roundtable in May 2024, with participants from the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) (URA), Housing & Development Board (HDB), and JTC Corporation (JTC), along with representatives from Seoul Housing (SH). The roundtable facilitated exciting and fruitful engagements between representatives from Singapore and Seoul, fostering a rich exchange of ideas on urban development and infrastructure management. How should one view architecture through the lens of an ecological deficit? Our Chief Executive SiewHaip Yeo was invited to speak about regenerative futures at the annual Board of Architects Presentation Ceremony and Seminar. As the world’s demand and consumption of ecological resources increasingly surpass Earth’s ability to regenerate, net-zero approaches are no longer adequate. There is now a need to design resilient, sustainable, and future-forward cities, and adopt an approach that is nature-positive, propelling our environment towards net-positive outcomes. At the seminar, Siew Haip spoke about regenerative design approaches and the importance of revitalising the natural ecosystems we have harmed. He shared ideas and principles found in nature, such as biophilia and biomimicry, and how these may be applied in architecture and buildings. Vernacular solutions for small houses in Ha Tinh City towards sustainable and adaptation to climate change Abstract: Geographically located on the central coastal plain of Vietnam, with low, flat topography, Ha Tinh City has an urban architecture which interwoven closely with very characteristic rural areas. In 2017-2021, we conducted a research project on building a system of green architecture criteria and proposed architectural design solutions for sustainable small-scale housing in Ha Tinh City in the context of climate change. The research project has conducted surveys, interviews and measurements of climate data at 195 representative houses in 4 typical urban areas of the city. Based on very detailed survey results, combined with the traditional vernacular experience gained from local experts and residents, we have gradually analyzed and assessed the effects of climate change on houses and human activities, from which to build a set of criteria to guide people to build or renovate their homes in the direction of green vernacular architecture which is more sustainable and better adapt to climate change in Ha Tinh. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending an enlightening seminar by Philippe Rahm, a visionary architect, at the NUS Department of Architecture. His talk offered a profound exploration into the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and climate—a timely and critical subject as we face the growing challenges of the 21st century. Philip began by revisiting the historical foundations of architecture and urbanism, where climate and health were pivotal in shaping the forms of cities and buildings. He explained how, in the latter half of the 20th century, these considerations were largely sidelined due to the rise of fossil fuel energy, leading to the greenhouse effect and global warming we grapple with today. The crux of his talk was a call to action for architects and urban designers to re-engage with these climatic issues, advocating for designs that prioritize local climatic contexts and sustainable energy resources. Philip emphasized the need to reset our discipline by recognizing atmospheric qualities—air, light, heat, and humidity—as essential building materials. By treating convection, thermal conduction, evaporation, emissivity, and effusivity as design tools, Rahm believes we can revolutionize not only the aesthetics but also the social values of architecture. His approach, grounded in dialectical materialism, suggests a transformative path for architecture in an era of climate change. It was an inspiring and thought-provoking session that challenged us to rethink the way we approach the design of our buildings and cities, placing the environment at the core of our creative processes. Reflecting on Philip's insights, I am more convinced than ever that sustainability must be at the heart of everything we create. As architects, designers, and urban planners, we have a responsibility not only to innovate but to ensure that our work contributes to a healthier, more sustainable future. Recent Master of Science Dissertation at Architectural Association [EmTech] – NOTUN by Darya Holub, Hankai Ye, Chuyu Zhang This thesis tackles the challenge of increasing vulnerability in coastal areas of #Bangladesh due to seasonal #flooding and #cyclones exacerbated by #climate change. The research offers an exploration of traditional #disaster #management strategies and proposes #bio-based #construction solutions. By integrating #bamboo and innovative materials such as #biodegradable bricks, the thesis addresses the need for sustainable #coastal architecture that can withstand extreme weather conditions. Shivering through icy winters then baking in boiling summers – social housing residents experience poor indoor conditions, thermal performance and energy poverty. A new review by FEIT's Prof Lu Aye, A/Prof Felix Kin Peng Hui and Dr Amitha Jayalath and Dr Paulo Vaz Serra from the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning of studies on thermal comfort and energy efficiency in affordable housing between 2010 and 2022 found more localised research was required to develop policies tailored to the specific needs of our low-income households. [COP16 UN Convention on Biological Diversity] Biodiversity forms the basis of life on Earth, which human is a part of. Planetary boundary framework defines biodiversity as one of nine boundaries that help regulate the planet’s operating system, some suggest that human has already crossed the threshold. While there are different understanding to where the “tipping point” is (or was!), all agree that human activities are continuing to dangerously destabilize life on Earth. As landscape architect, it’s our daily work to intervene with our built-environment. It ought to be part of our responsibilities to ensure everything we do is nature-positive, and we can’t do that alone. Through collaboration, education, and actions, we face the challenges together.
