💬 International Energy Week speaker Dr Fatih Birol HonFEI from International Energy Agency (IEA) speaks out following the IEA's Renewables 2024 report, which forecasts that ‘the world is not far from the pace required to meet the COP28 target of tripling world renewable energy capacity by the end of this decade, keeping net zero within reach’. Dr Birol commented that ‘Looking at market trends and the appetite from investors around the world, I wouldn’t be surprised if next year […] there will be more positive surprises coming’ (IIGCC). We're thrilled to have him join us at International Energy Week 2025! Dr Birol has been named in the TIME100, TIME’s annual list of the world’s most influential people. He has also been named by Forbes as one of the most influential people in the world of energy, and by the Financial Times as the Energy Personality of the Year. About us
The Energy Institute (EI) is the chartered professional membership body for people who work across the world of energy. Our purpose is creating a better energy future for our members and society by accelerating a just global energy transition to net zero. We do this by: -Attracting, developing and equipping the diverse future energy workforce -Informing energy decision-making through convening expertise and advice -Enabling industry and consumers to make energy lower carbon, safer and more efficient A registered charity, incorporated by Royal Charter in 2003, the EI is licensed by the Engineering Council (UK) to offer Chartered, Incorporated and Engineering Technician status to engineers, and by the Society for the Environment to award Chartered Environmentalist status. We are also unique in granting Chartered Energy Manager status. The EI was set up in 2003 as a result of a merger between the Institute of Petroleum (IP) and the Institute of Energy (InstE). Both Institutes had a proud and distinguished heritage developed over many years supporting their particular energy sectors. Increasingly these sectors have converged, creating an integrated global energy market which has been mirrored by the development of the Energy Institute - established to address both the depth and breadth of the subject. Today , the EI is home to a range of collaborative initiatives, including the G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation, SafetyOn and POWERful Women. We host the annual International Energy Week, EI Awards, publish New Energy World Magazine and the Energy Barometer, and provide the Toolbox web app helping the energy workforce learn lessons from incidents and get home safe.

We were pleased to take the gender equality message to #COP29 today, to show that better diversity, equity and inclusion is central to a just and inclusive clean energy transition that leaves no-one behind. On the UK Pavilion this morning, in partnership with Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, our Board Member Nick Wayth CEng FEI FIMechE (CEO Energy Institute) spoke about "Achieving a STEP change in gender equality for a successful energy transition" ⚡️ Inspiring fellow speakers were Rt Hon Anneliese Dodds MP (keynote), Debbie Palmer (Director, Energy, Climate and Environment, FCDO), Sophie Westlake, Deputy Director, IEU DESNZ, Evangelos Pastras CEng MICE MBA ACGI, Commonwealth Sustainable Energy Transition Youth Action group, and Rachel McEwen, Chief Sustainability Officer, SSE plc "Climate policy responses themselves can have unintended negative gender-based impacts. If just transition policies are not in place, occupational gender stereotypes are likely to persist even in the emerging green economy, preventing women from benefitting from the new jobs created." - Nick Wayth 💡 What are 3 actions that can achieve a step change? 1️⃣ be bolder with ambitions: adopt targets and report data to closely monitor progress 2️⃣ be open to learning and collaboration 3️⃣ engage the majority to show that better DEI benefits everyone, while giving greater visibility to women having an impact in the sector 📽️ The recording from this morning's session is now live here: https://lnkd.in/eXXhF5mi Our thanks to Nick Wayth CEng FEI FIMechE for your powerful advocacy, to the UK government for partnering with us on this event and to Alison Flower (FCDO), Tania Kumar CBI (Confederation of British Industry) and Julie Evans (DESNZ). #COP29Azerbaijan #climateaction #diversityequityandinclusion #DEI #womeninenergy

Austin L. AMEI Interim CEng, grew up in the city of Ipoh, Malaysia, a place that holds a rich history of tin mining. Although in the 1980s it met its decline, it also granted opportunities to benefit from more efficient use of energy and resources. Looking back, Austin realises those early concerns shaped his vision. His family's upbringing also taught him to be conscious of energy consumption. This ultimately led him to his role at WOHA Architects, where he now provides energy-efficiency solutions for building designs. It also led him to become an Associate Membership of the EI. And through one of EI’s webinars, he learned about the pathway of Interim Registration, to achieving full CEng status and progress toward his career goal — achieving the highest professional standards and full chartered engineer status. The US election outcome is likely to have repercussions across the world of energy, also in the international climate discussions taking place right now at COP29 in Baku. Glad to have provided my initial thoughts recently on BBC radio, and quoted this week in the Energy Institute member magazine. https://lnkd.in/ewUPetJY #NewEnergyWorld is a great weekly read, embracing the whole energy industry as it connects and converges to address the decarbonisation challenge. From the dynamics under way to reduce emissions in oil and gas, through improvements to the efficiency of energy conversion and use, to cutting-edge initiatives in renewable and low carbon technologies. And lots about the people in energy too. To stay up to date, visit the web page to subscribe to free emails. Or join the EI for additional exclusive content such as this week’s great feature on what to expect from COP29

🌎#NewEnergyWorld 🏛️How will Trump’s return to the White House reshape US energy policy? As President-Elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House in January 2025, the energy sector is bracing itself for significant shifts in #USenergypolicy. Despite fears that his repeated pledge to prioritise #oilandgas production could slow global efforts to combat #climatechange, many experts believe robust growth of renewable energy in the US – thanks to Biden’s incentives under the #InflationReductionAct – will persist – Andy Brown OBE 🔗Read more: https://ow.ly/9kLs50U6c5I

It’s a privilege to represent the Energy Institute and POWERful Women here at COP29 Azerbaijan. Over the coming days I’ve got a bunch of panels, roundtables and receptions - focusing on how we can create a bettter energy future by accelerating a just transition to net zero - from methane emissions, to accelerating renewables deployment in the CIS region (and globally) and how we can make a step change in gender representation in the energy sector. I look forward to seeing many of our stakeholders and friends here!
