Stigma can be a major barrier to care for people with Substance Use Disorders (SUD). Stigma can lead to discrimination, shame, and isolation, affecting physical and mental health, access to care, adequate treatment support, and social support. Did you know that there are four different kinds of stigma? One kind of stigma is recovery community stigma. Recovery community stigma could look like thinking someone is not in recovery when they are taking medications for substance use disorder treatment. Stigma among peers in recovery could lead to feeling less of a sense of community or further isolation from support. Remember during this holiday season to look out for our friends and family. Together, we can work towards a future where everyone is treated with respect and care and feels like they belong.
