🙌The CARING NATURE requirements definition phase is coming to an end ! ⏳Over the past six months, we've held #workshops with experts from various sectors (private companies, public institutions, hospitals, non-profit foundations, etc.). These workshops focused on identifying opportunities, gaps, and issues in the five key areas of CARING NATURE: #Buildings, #Governance, #Waste, #PatientTravel, and #StaffEngagement. 🏨🌱 💡Why we did this? 🌿To ensure our solutions benefit the end users, we needed to understand their technical and user requirements. Therefore, we gathered input from target adopters, co-developers, validators, as well as 50 experts from the Reference Stakeholder Group contributing on a voluntary basis. 🔬We are now excited to begin developing and testing our 10 solutions to make strides in decarbonizing healthcare! 🌍🏨 👉 Stay tuned for more updates ! #healthcare #health #HorizonEurope #climate-neutral #EUprojects #decarbonisation #Health #SustainableHealthcare Hospital General de Granollers | Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore | Cyprus University of Technology | LUT University | University College Dublin | University of West Attica | archipelago architects | 4D Architects Amsterdam| ERCS Ltd | Idea75 | G.A.C. 🌿Check out the net-zero roadmap for healthcare designed by the Operation Zero project. The Operation Zero project, co-funded by the European Commission and led by Health Care Without Harm and Arup, has designed an innovative methodology for health authorities to measure their #healthcare #emissions and implement a #roadmap to reach net-zero healthcare system by 2050. 🏨🌱 🌍Between 2021 and 2022, this methodology has been tested and validated in three European health authorities, located in Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal to come up with detailed carbon footprint analyses and consistent decarbonization roadmaps. Since 2022, the methodology is being refined in two other health authorities located in Belgium and Ireland. A community of practice is also being set up to ensure the replicability of the roadmap across Europe. 🙌CARING NATURE, with 10 #sustainable #solutions for healthcare, supports this initiative towards low-carbon healthcare services. 🏨🌱 Learn more about the methodology ⬇️ #healthcare #health #HorizonEurope #climate-neutral #EUprojects #Decarbonisation #Roadmap #SustainableHealthcare #Sustainabilitymodel Hospital General de Granollers | Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore | Cyprus University of Technology | LUT University | University of West Attica | archipelago architects | 4D Architects Amsterdam | ERCS Ltd | Idea75 | G.A.C. 🌍 How do you work with sustainability? This is one of our themes in every newsletter. Last time Sara Widén (psychologist at Karolinska Institutet) told us about integrating sustainable development in education. She has committed to providing health professionals with knowledge and skills to promote sustainable development. A key group in achieving this is our teachers. – We conducted a focus group study to explore teachers’ perceived preconditions for the task and what support they need. Based on the study’s results, we are now developing educational support to be pilot-tested in autumn 2025, explains Sara Widén. 🏨The #healthcare sector has a severe #climate footprint, accounting for 4,4% of global CO2 emissions, almost twice that of the aviation industry. ☁️Energy intensive heating and powering systems in hospitals and manufacturing supply chains, medical waste disposal, transport, etc. are top sources of healthcare’s carbon emissions 🩺🌱World Health Organization identifies a cyclic and paradoxical relation linking health and climate change: the healthcare sector contributes to threaten the #environment and damaged environments are responsible for one quarter of the global burden of disease. 🤝As the third largest emitter of healthcare-related carbon, the European Union has a major role to play towards decarboniszng the healthcare sector, and thus improving human health. CARING NATURE will be a leading project in this direction. 📢Learn more about the carbon footprint of the healthcare sector with a report from Health Care Without Harm (2019) ⬇️ #healthcare #health #decarbonation #greendeal #greentransition #EUproject #innovation #wastemanagement #carbonfootprint Hospital General de Granollers | Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore | Cyprus University of Technology | LUT University | University College Dublin | University of West Attica | archipelago architects | 4D Architects Amsterdam | ERCS Ltd | Idea75 | G.A.C. Province and university strengthen their joint commitment to #transitions in Utrecht. As of 1 February 2024, the Provincie Utrecht and the Utrecht University School of Governance (USG) (USBO (Universiteit Utrecht)) have agreed to a three-year agreement for research into sustainability and health innovations in the province of Utrecht. The research is action-oriented: the researchers, together with stakeholders from the region, will be looking for opportunities for innovations to accelerate the transitions. Both parties are enthusiastic about the agreement. Albert Meijer, Professor of Public Innovation at USG says: "We think it is very important to make an active contribution to accelerating transitions in the province of Utrecht. Through the Fellowship, the boundary between science and policy can be further bridged." Do you want to know more about how this collaboration accelerates transitions? “The complexity of needs in society between sustainable development and digital transformation” will be one of the topics addressed during the Researchers' Night pre-event organized on Sept. 23 by UNINA's Department of Public Health. It will be an opportunity to identify innovative approaches to support an active and healthy lifestyle throughout the life cycle, also taking into account smart health age-friendly environments. Particularly important is the intergenerational structure of the event to share topics such as green and digital transition. UNINA, as a partner of #NewEcoSmart, is promoting green&digital comparisons and activities. Last week, I had the chance to present the first stage of my research at #ATRF2024 Conference and PhD Symposium, held at Monash University, Melbourne. One of the key areas discussed at this conference was the integration of transport and land use planning, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and government agencies. It seems that our research is becoming more relevant to this context. The title of my presentation was “Exploring the association between housing type and travel behaviour: A focus on public transport use in Melbourne”. Our finding showed that: • Access to public transport significantly influences public transport use. • Apartment residents tend to use public transport more than residents in separate housing, even after controlling for access to public transport. However, the share of public transport use varies by trip purpose. • Work-related and education trips accounted for the greatest share of public transport use across all housing types – likely due to their regularity and predictability. • Results suggest that other factors (e.g. socio-demographic, attitudes, preferences) influence public transport use among apartment residents in Melbourne. • The next stages of our research explore the determinants of public transport use among apartment residents and how these factors shape their decisions regarding public transport use. Special thanks to my supervisors - Chris De Gruyter, Afshin Jafari, and Sarah Foster - for their commitment to my PhD project and contributions to this presentation (and paper!), and #ATRF2024 organisers for their efforts in making the conference happen.
