Conservation in Africa has often been disconnected from the needs and aspirations of local communities, leading to efforts that may not fully address the pressing challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya, CEO of the African Wildlife Foundation and member of the Club of Rome, argues that successful conservation must integrate with economic development and the broader global climate change agenda. His latest article in The Fletcher Forum of World Affairs from Tufts University discusses the critical role Africa plays in tackling climate change. From the Congo Basin's vast carbon-absorbing forests to the mineral resources essential for green technologies, Africa's contribution is indispensable. Sebunya also explores the demographic trends that will shape Africa's future and their impact on conservation and development. Read the full article to discover how Africa's approach to conservation and sustainable development can drive positive change globally 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e8ydUwFe #Conservation #ClimateChange #SustainableDevelopment #Africa #TheFletcherForum

The high seas—covering nearly half of our planet—are our shared global commons and are critical to addressing the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Protecting them will require political will and collective action. Jacinda Ardern, former New Zealand Prime Minister and Conservation International Distinguished Fellow, emphasized the urgency of this moment at UN Climate Week today in New York, calling on global leaders to step up for high seas conservation. We’re already seeing that leadership in action: Singapore, Kenya, Gambia, Liberia, and others announced their intent to ratify the High Seas Treaty, while the government of Chile announced a "first mover leadership collaborative" with governments ready to protect critical high seas areas. This is promising progress, but we cannot wait for ratification to get to work. Conservation International is working closely with governments, local partners, and donors to stop illegality and human rights abuses at sea, to regulate distant water fishing, to explore and understand critical high seas areas, and to develop the plans and coalitions needed to catalyze the first generation of well-managed high seas protected areas. #HighSeas #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #ProtectOurOceans #BBNJ #HighSeasTreaty #RacetoRatify #UNClimateWeek #IllegalityatSea

The ecosystems and populations in the high Andes ⛰️ suffer from the effects of climate change and intensive agriculture. We are working to restore biodiversity and cultivate local products in a more environmentally friendly way - together with the government, local communities, and smallholders. How do local nature conservation initiatives and the pooling of global funds 💸 support these efforts? The Kiwa Initiative's Pu Tahi Haga no Ganaa project aims to understand and preserve water resources on Anaa Atoll. This effort protects the people of Tukuhora village from climate change risks while supporting biodiversity. Recognizing that fragile forest ecosystems worsen water issues, the project will restore a natural forest on raised coral (heo), a key conservation area. Collaboration with the local community will help understand water use and highlight the need to protect biodiversity linked to this resource. 🎥 Watch the video to learn more about the project. #KiwaInitiative #NaturebasedSolutions #SustainableFuture European Union; Agence Française de Développement; Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada; Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade; Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP); Pacific Community-SPC; IUCN

Excellent article by Elizabeth Alberts for Mongabay summarizing the 9th Our Ocean Conference, which coincidentally and devastatingly occurred as the news broke about the world’s coral reefs undergoing a mass bleaching event. A total of 469 new commitments were made by government, NGO and philanthropic delegates, including pledges to establish marine protected areas; combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; protect marine biodiversity; and fight climate change. Dr. Elizabeth Mcleod, Global Ocean Director at The Nature Conservancy, shared the following with Mongabay in an interview: “These events are absolutely critical because they’re an opportunity to bring together governments, with the private sector, with civil society. It’s an opportunity to galvanize our efforts, and to really support the power of our partnerships to deliver concrete actions for our oceans.” Our Ocean Greece Sustainable Ocean Alliance Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy #OurOcean2024 #OurOceanGreece #SustainableFisheries #SmallScaleFisheries #SustainableBlueEconomy #ClimateAction #MarinePollution #BlueFoods #AquaticFoods #Aquaculture

💧 Happy Mediterranean Day! 💧 The Mediterranean is one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots, but it is also among the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of climate change. Collaborative action is the only way to face this growing threat. 🤝 IUCN Med is proud to support the Mediterranean Alliance for Wetlands (MAW), a network of over 25 environmental NGOs and research organisations from 18 countries working to protect wetlands across the region, as a capacity building advisor. Wetlands play a critical role in mitigating climate change and ensuring biodiversity resilience. MAW strives to elevate wetlands' importance in society while empowering policymakers, managers, and civil society to create inclusive, climate-resilient solutions. Last month, MAW members gathered in Camargue for their General Assembly. The meeting highlighted clear priorities: strengthening conservation financing and building capacities across the region. Networks like MAW exemplify the power of collaboration in achieving these goals. The Mediterranean’s future depends on collective effort.
