Over the past seven years as a UI/UX designer, I've come to understand that effective networking extends far beyond merely seeking out new clients. A strategy that is often underestimated yet highly impactful involves rekindling relationships with past clients. We all experience periods when work slows down, projects are scarce, and our presence on social media dwindles. It’s during these times that we might be tempted to believe that simply increasing our online activity will attract new opportunities. However, this approach can be misleading and is not always the most effective solution. Instead, reaching out to former clients can be a game-changer. If you delivered outstanding work for them in the past, there's a good chance they may want to collaborate with you again. By reestablishing contact and demonstrating your continued growth and expertise, you not only remind them of the quality of your work but also position yourself as a reliable choice for their upcoming projects. Networking is not solely about expanding your contacts list; it’s equally about maintaining and leveraging the relationships you’ve already built. Keeping the lines of communication open with past clients, staying on their radar, and reminding them of the value you bring to the table can lead to renewed collaborations and business growth. Moreover, reconnecting with past clients offers additional benefits beyond potential new projects. It can lead to referrals, as satisfied clients are likely to recommend you to others in their network. Additionally, reestablishing these connections can provide valuable feedback on past work, helping you to refine your approach and improve your services for future clients. In the long run, nurturing existing relationships can be just as crucial as forming new ones. By focusing on reconnecting with those who already know and appreciate your work, you can create a strong foundation for sustained growth and continued success in your career.

I’ve seen a lot of aspiring UX Designers crush networking because of these game-changing strategies. Here’s how you can build a professional network the right way that opens doors to new opportunities: *Step One* Read how to win friends and influence people or at least watch the video summary. Because this will be the building blocks for everything else. Be a good thoughtful human being. Leverage LinkedIn Optimize your profile: Complete your profile with a professional photo and that says exactly what you want to achieve and what you’re interested in. Engage with content: Follow industry leaders, ask thoughtful questions engaging with their posts, and join relevant groups. Reach out: Send personalized connection requests mentioning common interests. Tell them why you are connecting with them or what you admire about what they do. Attend Industry Events Prepare ahead: Research the event, speakers, and attendees. Keep it simple Engage actively: Attend workshops and networking sessions and introduce yourself to new people. Look people in the eye when you speak to them and ask good questions about the other person. The goal is to learn. Follow up: Connect on LinkedIn with a personalized message after the event. Be yourself be respectful of their time. Join Local UX Communities Participate regularly: Attend meetups, volunteer, and share your work. Share your work unfinished , in progress, whatever. People like to know what you’re working on. Be genuine. Seek feedback: Share your projects and ask for feedback. Be cautious with this and be respectful of others time. Everyone has a life and when or if they take the time out to be help that’s a blessing. Use Online UX Platforms Showcase your portfolio: Regularly update and share your work on wherever you have a platform. Engage in discussions: Participate in forums and give/receive feedback. Make sure to contribute value where you can. Seek Mentorship Identify mentors: Look for professionals whose careers you admire. Remember to do your research and be respectful of others times. Reach out respectfully: Send concise messages explaining your admiration and seeking advice. Keep it short and simple. Be proactive: Seek advice and show progress to your mentor. Give short brief updates.
