🌟 Shining a Light on the Unspoken Realities of the UX Design World 🌟 🔍 Are you tired of pouring your heart and soul into extensive case studies, only to be met with silence or rejection? You're not alone. As a seasoned UX designer, I've navigated through countless interview processes, each seemingly more demanding than the last. Yet, the issue isn't just the complexity of the tasks or the time invested; it's the lack of reciprocity and respect for our expertise. 🚫 It's disheartening to see companies request elaborate case studies without offering compensation or even constructive feedback in return. We invest our time, energy, and creativity into these projects, only to receive a generic rejection email—or worse, radio silence. But it's time to speak up and demand better treatment for ourselves and our fellow designers. 🤝 That's why I'm advocating for transparency and fairness in the interview process. While it's understandable for companies to assess candidates' skills through challenges, there's a fine line between reasonable expectations and exploitation. Junior designers may benefit from small tasks to showcase their abilities, but expecting senior designers to dedicate weeks to a project without compensation is simply unjust. 💼 So, how can we protect ourselves in this landscape? One strategy I've found effective is to establish boundaries from the outset. Before diving into a case study, I initiate a dialogue with the company and request a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). This not only safeguards my work but also serves as a litmus test for the company's professionalism and respect for intellectual property. 🚩 Additionally, it's crucial to be vigilant for red flags during the interview process. Pay attention to how the company communicates and handles your inquiries. Are they transparent about their expectations? Do they value your time and expertise? Trust your instincts and don't hesitate to walk away if something feels off. 🌱 Together, let's cultivate a culture of mutual respect and fairness in the UX design community. By advocating for ourselves and supporting one another, we can ensure that our talents are valued and our contributions are acknowledged. The Design Thinking Process of this assessment was birthed from a place of ideation, even though short but gave me the ability to think and expand my horizon. I was able to come up with the Case study/User Research, User Persona, the low-Fi wireframing, High-Fidelity Wireframing, Visual design and the Usability testing. The challenge I faced was the challenge of balancing simplicity with functionality so that the solution would be meaningful to the Users I also encountered the challenge of limited time, even though this was done in 1 day, working on this project pushed me to enhance my time management and prioritize tasks effectively. After mentoring more than 250+ designers, here is a 4-step framework I have developed to make the mentoring effective. 1.Discovery before advising Understand the root cause and the pain points of your mentees. Keep asking why questions to understand the problem. Assess the blocker that's holding them back from advancing to the next steps. 2.Visualize the roadmap I often open up a Google Doc or Notion document and write down a plan and roadmap to effectively reach their goals. Structure helps build clarity. 3.Curate trustworthy resources Even though there are tons of resources out there, many struggle to understand which one to choose. Curate the trusted and credible resources that will help them in the next steps. Everyone is different; what resource works for one might not work for another, so always personalize the resources. 4.Measure success and establish an accountability framework Understand what success looks like and track it on a per-call basis. Also, ask accountability-focused questions to make sure the guidance has been implemented. I provide access to chat during the mentoring period, as synchronous communication can be helpful here. Doing application UI design without a design system is like trying to reinvent the wheel whilst driving directly into a wall… 💥🚗 ...Because you're not about to change the design world by doing it from scratch, and you shouldn't even be trying to. The more likely outcome is that you're wasting time trying to solve a problem thats already been solved rather than utilising design systems to skip ahead and dealing with the real problems for your users. When users interact with CTAs, tables and other core UI elements, what they need is something they already know how to use. 𝗝𝗔𝗞𝗢𝗕'𝗦 𝗟𝗔𝗪 𝗢𝗙 𝗨𝗫 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗦: Users spend most of their time on other sites. This means that users prefer your site to work the same way as all the other sites they already know. 🌱 At Zevero we are utilising a design system that serves our users so we can nail the basics right away and have time to solve the 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟 design problems like creating new features and iterating our user flows.
