Alex Terzariol, our General Manager, delivered an insightful talk on the New Aesthetic and Performance for Design at NOI Techpark Bolzano. Polymeric materials are vital in product design, with sustainability now a key focus. As environmental concerns grow, there’s a shift towards alternative materials matching the performance of virgin fossil polymers. This trend prioritises biopolymers, redefining aesthetics and functionality in design. Alex showcased advanced biopolymers, scalable renewable plastics production, resource conservation, and the “Ivy from cradle to cradle” case study. 🔵 At Girbau Lab we work with innovators and innovations from different fields. Among our goals, to reduce the impacts of textiles during the use phase and to provide better textile care thus increasing the life span of textiles. We also promote textile circularity and the hierarchy of waste: reduce, reuse and recycle. And we are interested in technologies that contribute to these goals. 👕 Vividye is an excellent example! A technological approach to extend the life of textiles and improve their recyclability. By making the print removable at wash, Vividye facilitates textile circularity in the long run.   ✨ We have been testing the removability of Vividye prints during the washing process in our #OpenLab. Which are the breakthroughs in biobased building blocks expected by BIORING? Our new bio-chemicals will work in smart combination with bio-chemicals already on the market, to generate new value chain of more recyclable and durable products. In terms of raw materials, BIORING start from available compounds. We expect the market of feedstock-based chemicals to grow; bio-polyols are, for example, increasingly becoming competitive. For the end-of-life you can look for a more compostable or a more recyclable product, as these have typically different chemical structures and properties, with weaker or stronger bonds. In BIORING we are developing protective, resistant, and recyclable coatings, so that the coating will not be a limitation in the overall recyclability of the final coated product. In the specific BIORING case studies (a coating for an interior component of a car, and the top layer of a laminate substrate for kitchen furniture) the most valuable factor for the customer is aesthetic. As it is just a very thin layer of coating on top of a massive substrate (some 30 microns on a 4–5-millimetre component), recyclability is thus a minor issue. However, the BIORING platform will allow to change mixture of chemicals, to reduce resistance and improve biodegradability properties of the coating (or vice versa), as this can be an added value in other sectors, such as packaging & textile. 🌿 Exploring the Future of Fabrics ✨ This year’s Future Fabrics Expo by The Sustainable Angle brought together a collection of over 5,000+ certified responsibly produced materials - showcasing innovation at the intersection of design, health, and sustainability. At the expo, HML researcher Jessica Thies explored the latest advancements, collecting textile samples and engaging with manufacturers for the Donghia 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘳 Materials Library at Parsons School of Design - The New School. This hands-on research helps us continually expand our collection of safer, more sustainable material options.  Highlights that inspired us: ✨ Decomposition Library by Notgroundbreaking: A compelling exploration of how textiles and biomaterials break down into compost. It’s a visual reminder of the importance of designing for the full lifecycle of textiles in this case for decomposition and prioritizing soil health. ✨ Sparxell: A stunning plant-based pigment that mimics the structural colors of butterfly wings using cellulose from sustainably managed forests. This non-toxic, plastic-free material offers a more sustainable approach to finishes and coloration. ✨ ELEVATE by UNCAGED Innovations: A scalable leather alternative crafted from grain byproducts, plant polymers, and natural ingredients. Seeing this material evolve from prototype to production highlights the rapid advancements in biobased innovations. We’re eager to run these new materials through our rigorous evaluation process, which addresses energy use, chemical impacts, carbon emissions, and toxicity. Neri Oxman Believes in Fashion Reincarnation ELLE Magazine's Véronique Hyland and Neri Oxman recently discussed healing the broken industries of product, architecture, and molecular design, with a focus on a product's circular cycle. OXMAN's OZERO technology seeks to combat one of fashion's greatest waste problems: A shoe can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. “In the past, my grandmother would pass a piece of clothing to me, and I would pass it to my daughter.
