‘If ad agencies cannot sell themselves how can they hope to sell their client’s brands?’ That was an observation from my ad agency boss back in the 90s. That rang true back then, even more so now with increased competition and clutter. The comment is to be taken in the right spirit & context. It is not about making every ad feel the same so much so that it has the stamp of the agency than of the brand (that used to be a trend earlier). While some legacy agency brands get visibility, become top of mind through massive ad campaigns, mid-sized and small agencies have it tough for recognition and some sort of distinctiveness. They will have to rely on clutter-breaking creative being talked about for recognition of their brand name. There have been many new agency brands launched over the last decade or so. Some newly launched brands have aced visibility & PR for themselves through a mix of ‘award winning’ work (which gets covered in trade portals) and some genuinely good work for real brands. As the saying goes 'PR kiya toh darna kya?' And I mean it in a good way. #advertising
