🇺🇦 Ukraine has made history by becoming the first country to recognize Human Responsibility Day as a national holiday. This is a powerful reminder for all of us to take meaningful actions, both big and small, to drive positive change together! Our team is excited to introduce Better Mobility, a mobile app dedicated to improving accessibility for wheelchair users. Given the eclectic and often challenging nature of Soviet-era architecture, we focused on user-submitted photos to provide real-world insights into the accessibility of public places. Better Mobility is a crowdsourced platform where anyone can contribute by adding photos and comments about accessible (or inaccessible) locations in Ukraine. Our goal is to create a community, based on comprehensive map of barrier-free places, while raising awareness about the need for inclusivity in business and public spaces. ✨ We’ve launched the MVP and have begun populating the map, with the team actively gathering feedback to make improvements. Stay tuned for more updates — there’s much more to come! #AccessibilityMatters #InclusiveDesign #BetterMobility #HumanResponsibilityDay #BarrierFree #Ukraine

Congratulations to Intopia for another fun and informative Global Accessibility Awareness Day Melbourne event! My key takeaways: - Irith Williams – design research needs to involve those with an actual lived experience. Being trauma-informed is vital for designing for vulnerable communities. - Cathy Basterfield – plain English isn't enough for a significant percentage of Australians with low literacy. Despite digital literacy gains in Australia over the past few years, there is a significant gap for First Nations people. - Andrew Nevins, CPWA – please provide a tab index on your website! Although browsers have improved, a tab index will ensure all important parts of a page are focusable and accessible by keyboard. - Allison Ravenhall – Apple has introduced data charts/graphs for iOS apps, which are made more accessible to blind and vision-impaired by signifying increases and decreases in a trendline through raising and lowering pitch audibly (see https://lnkd.in/gw9Ar5VW) - Michelle Chu – design for everyone means getting out of your bubble (with particular emphasis on those in positions of power!) #gaad

"Thinking about books, delivery apps, online shopping. There's a whole world out there that I honestly wouldn't have access to or would have to rely on others for, if there weren't digital accessibility standards and if it wasn't prioritized." Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is observed every third Thursday in May, and its purpose is to get people to engage in meaningful conversations about how we can create a more inclusive digital space for all users. In 2022, we asked then-UsableNet intern Lily Mordaunt what accessibility means to her. Hear Lily's perspective on the importance of web accessibility, and let us know what web accessibility means to you. #A11y #GAAD #GAAD2024

one of the goals of digital accessibility is personal autonomy, to be able to lead your life as you want with minimal reliance on others. This wayfinding technology is one of those step changes that takes us towards that autonomy: independent navigation of internal public spaces where GPS doesn't work well.
The CNIB Access Labs team is thrilled to announce that GoodMaps accessible indoor navigation technology has been installed at the CF Rideau Centre in Ottawa! 🎉 As partners with GoodMaps, CNIB Access Labs is proud to help promote and support the implementation of this innovative technology. This collaboration with Cadillac Fairview is a significant step towards making retail spaces more accessible for everyone. We look forward to continued impact in partnership with Cadillac Fairview and thank CF for their commitment to ensuring that all visitors, regardless of their abilities, can navigate and enjoy the Rideau Centre with ease. On a personal note, as a blind person, I have often avoided retail environments due to the difficulty of navigating and finding stores. GoodMaps changes all of that. This technology makes it possible for me to confidently explore and enjoy shopping centers. It is truly game-changing! 🔗 Learn more about this initiative: https://lnkd.in/e-W-eibi #Accessibility #Innovation #Inclusion #GoodMaps #CNIBAccessLabs #CadillacFairview #RideauCentre

Based on decades of research, Waymap’s cutting edge product (which doesn't require signal) is transforming the lives of blind and disabled users – and making everyone else’s easier to navigate too! Already improving accessibility in 11+ cities in 130+ locations, with 32m+ square feet mapped, we can’t wait to see Waymap continue to scale… Congratulations! #GrowingBusinessAwards #positiveimpact #accessibility #inclusive #growthbusiness

𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 (𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁) 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲! It has been a week since we delivered this year's project. In 2024, the app's focus was a major problem we face in Portugal, every year: 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀. 🔥 📲 Blaze Control was designed to be an app that aims to prevent the Portuguese population from passing through areas that have an active fire, by warning the population close to the occurrence. 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝘇𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵: 👉🏻 A live chat, where every user can access and post a short note, ensuring everyone's safety. 👉🏻 Several trail options to guarantee that the user doesn't cross areas with active fires. 😲 It is crucial to note that the app was developed and conceived by two teenage girls, at the ages of 13 and 14! It is wonderful to have the opportunity to learn and engage with the future generation and understand how they see the world and where they want to lead it. An important mention to Annamaria Anastasia, with whom I have had the privilege of sharing this experience over the last few months, and a big thank you to Cláudia Figueira & Jaqueline Correia, for your guidance and for making this project so pleasant. New App Enhances Accessibility in Colorado State Parks The Aira app is transforming outdoor experiences for blind and visually impaired adventurers in Colorado's state parks. By connecting users with trained virtual agents via their smartphone or computer cameras, Aira offers real-time visual interpretation, aiding with navigation, reading signs, and understanding landmarks. Each session is free for 30 minutes, with the option for additional sessions, making these parks more welcoming, equitable, and inclusive. However, users need a stable cellular connection for the app to function effectively, which can be inconsistent across different parks. This initiative, alongside the introduction of track chairs in parks like Staunton and Ridgeway, marks a significant step in making public lands more accessible for all.
