International Persons with Disability Day is today, and the theme for this year is about having members of the disability community become leaders in various aspects of life. Joe DiNero is a huge leader in the disability community. While he is our head user tester here, making sure websites are usable, he also teaches students how to use their assistive technologies with Helen Keller. Joe is helping bridge the gap between accessibility, usability, and technology. Who else should be mentioned as a leader in the disability community? Tag them in the comments! #IDPD #Usability #Inclusivity

Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities: A Call to Action on International Day for Persons with Disabilities As we observe the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on December 3, 2024, the theme this year, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future", holds particular resonance for me. The global disability rights movement’s slogan "Nothing About Us Without Us" reminds us of the importance of inclusion, representation, and agency in shaping our own lives. As someone who is deeply involved in both assistive technology and digital accessibility, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of leadership from within the disability community. Whether through my role as Assistant Program Director of Assistive Technology at Helen Keller Services for the Blind or as Head of Digital Accessibility User Testing at UsableNet, I’ve seen how essential it is for persons with disabilities to not only be part of the conversation but to lead it. This year’s theme calls on all of us to ensure that the leadership of persons with disabilities is not only recognized but actively amplified. Our voices must be heard in all spaces—whether advocating for accessible technology, leading policy changes, or shaping the development of inclusive environments. The progress we’ve made over the past decades, through community-led initiatives and advocacy, serves as a reminder of what’s possible when persons with disabilities are given the agency to lead. Yet, there is still much work to be done. As we look ahead, I’m proud to be part of a movement that is breaking down barriers and creating a world that is more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable for everyone. This International Day for Persons with Disabilities, let's continue to amplify the voices of those leading the charge toward an inclusive future. Together, we can create a world where every person—regardless of ability—has the opportunity to thrive. #IDPD2024 #DisabilityRights #Inclusion #Accessibility #Leadership #AssistiveTechnology #DigitalAccessibility
