Too often, we think we want a quick fix for our desires. We zip through the drive-through for dinner in a hurry. We pop over to Target after we drop the kids off at their activities so we can grab toothpaste, bread, Ibuprofen, new kitchen towels, and oops, a cute new pair of sunnies because, well, just because. We pull out our Amazon app when we need a new laptop bag because, OMG, the number of stores that *might* have exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s so much faster to just set up criteria to narrow it down than to drive to every store and say “nope, not quite.” Those are all fine for our everyday desires, but your book doesn’t fit into that category. You can’t “quick fix” that desire. And no, Alexa can’t write your book for you. (That’s actually a copyright issue that we could discuss later …) Instead of a quick fix, you need to focus on how the book will work for your business, dig deep for authentic storytelling, and let your writing flow so it doesn’t sound choppy. Maybe that sounds like a tall order, but my authors do that all the time. Our books are beautiful works that let the reader connect emotionally with the author because they sound relatable. Our authors guide the reader down the path to their win because they’ve been on that journey before and know where all the hurdles, potholes, and herds of sheep in the road are. They help you dodge around those like a ballerina leaping across the stage. A beautiful book that connects you with your audience really is possible in about five months. Ask me how …

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had the opportunity to connect old friends about this book. It’s been fun talking about the ideas in it, and the process. But it’s been really interesting to me to hear about the ideas they have for books. It’s ok to write a book! One of the things I’ve grappled with during this process is the self-doubt and self-criticism. My mind says things like “who are you to write a book about this,” or “what do you know?” The fact of the matter is that, like everyone else, I know what I know about it - as much or as little as that is. What’s most important, I think, is sharing your perspective. The amount of knowledge that you have about a topic can be important, but your perspective is even more important. And you, my friend, have a unique perspective on your experience of life. You look at things from a different point of view. So I encourage you, as I’ve been doing with all of my friends, to write a book! It doesn’t have to win the Nobel Prize, or the Pulitzer Prize. It doesn’t’ have to be earth-shattering. The process is really simple and straightforward, and takes about an hour a day, 5 days a week, for a month. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll realize that you’re writing for longer stretches, or more frequently in the day. And before you know it, you’ll have written a book!

Celebrating Rudine Bishop today! Someone posted about mirrors, windows and sliding doors. Bishop was the creator of that concept: "Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of a larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. The Award-winning Book "Find Your People: Building Deep Community in a Lonely World" by Jennie Allen is a guide to overcoming loneliness and fostering meaningful connections. In a world that's not so particular about building a tribe, this book helps you navigate the challenges of building deep relationships in today's disconnected world. Here are 8 lessons I pondered on after reading the book: 1. You're Not Alone: The book reassures you that you're not alone in feeling lonely and disconnected, and it offers hope and practical steps to find meaningful connections. 2. Vulnerability Leads to Connection: You learn that being vulnerable and authentic with others is the key to building deep, meaningful relationships that truly nourish your soul. 3. Seek Out Your Tribe: "Find Your People" encourages you to actively seek out and invest in relationships with people who support, challenge, and uplift you. 4. Community Requires Effort: You're reminded that building and maintaining community takes effort and intentionality, but the rewards of deep connection are well worth it. 5. Embrace Differences: The book teaches you to embrace the diversity within your community, recognizing that each person brings unique perspectives and gifts to the table. 6. Offer Grace and Forgiveness: You learn the importance of offering grace and forgiveness within your community, recognizing that people are imperfect and will inevitably make mistakes. 7. Be a Safe Space: This book encourages you to create a safe space where others can be vulnerable and authentic without fear of judgment or rejection. 8. Grow Together: Do not forget the value of growing together with your community, supporting each other through life's challenges and celebrating each other's victories. With thought-provoking words, the empowers you to step out of isolation and cultivate the kind of community that nourishes your soul and brings joy and purpose to your life. If you're struggling to find yourself in a community of like minds, then this book is just what you need.
