Nine (9) Things I Do (or Don’t Do) When Facilitating Workshops 🛠️ 🪛 Running workshops or development sessions can be daunting. There’s always so much to think about. Content, activities, guestlists, case studies... Most people focus all their attention on 'what's in the session' when, in reality, a lot of the magic happens around the edges—in HOW it's prepared and delivered. Here are 9 things I Focus On (or Avoid) to Help Create Meaningful Change: ❶ Get Prepared Know who will be in the room AND what they might bring to the table. Ask 3-5 pre-session questions on what they think and feel on the subject. ❷ Set Expectations Clarify what the day will look like, agree collectively on how you'll work together, and at the end, set expectations for what happens post-session. ❸ Guide (Don't Control) the Process. Make your goal collaboration - the process of connecting, building bonds and agreeing solutions together is often more powerful than the action you decide to take away. ❹ Use Humour (but Don’t Overdo It) Humour is a great tool to build trust and make heavy topics more accessible. Shared laughter brings people together. (If you’re lucky, I throw in a cheese joke or two! 🧀) ❺ Breath and Reset Short moments of breathwork or grounding exercises help the group focus and settle into the space or refocus. Especially useful online. ❻ Everyone Speaks in the First 10 Minutes Within the first ten minutes, everyone has had a chance to share and CONTRIBUTE, setting the tone for full participation. ❼ Deliver in Cycles of Activity Learn (listen/teach). Do (try/practice). Reflect (review/feedback) Then repeat. This keeps things simple and actionable. ❽ Lead with Vulnerability Openly share thoughts, feelings, and challenges. This encourages others to do the same, building trust and deeper connections between the group. ❾ Be Open to Going 'Off Piste' If the group’s energy pulls us in an unexpected direction, be open to exploring - but always keep one eye on the overall goal. And the time. What's your go-to DO or DON'T DO? 🌱 COMMENT to grow the conversation 💚 SHARE to spread the ideas #sustainability #netzero #engagement #peoplematter
This is a great list Briony. I love the point about guiding not controlling. And with you on the breath and reset ♥️
