"Session 2: Space Sustainability – Binding Regulation -v-The Space Race." "The space economy is evolving like never before. An unprecedented amount of public and private investment is going into new constellations leading to a renewed space race, and, causing concern for governments the world over about the sustainability of space for future generations. The boom in satellites being launched into space was arguably foreseeable a decade ago. This led to the adoption of the Long-Term Sustainability Guidelines by the UN in 2019. Yet the world remains far from agreeing on a binding set of norms and regulations that are vitally needed if the risks resulting from congestion in space are truly to be mitigated. Voluntary initiatives such as Charters and Sustainability Ratings continue to emerge but risk falling short of making a tangible difference. The European Union however is pioneering an approach that could put Europe at the forefront of binding regulation. The proposed EU Space Law (EUSL) is set to provide potentially binding measures (rules) and non-binding measures (labels) for the development of sustainable activities in space."... The increasing dependence on #space systems marks a pivotal juncture for global #infrastructure, where space acts not only as a strategic asset but also as a critical enabler for diverse capabilities. As the global space economy continues to evolve, the integration of new actors and technologies will require continued adaptation of legal and regulatory frameworks to support #sustainable and safe space activities. Looking ahead, the space industry will need to focus on technologies that facilitate rapid deployment and enhance the operational flexibility of space assets, such as advancements in on-orbit servicing, modular satellite designs, and AI-driven mission control systems. As the space economy evolves, adapting legal and regulatory frameworks and fostering international cooperation will be crucial for supporting sustainable space activities and boosting global space infrastructure resilience. However, there are still some critical bottlenecks that need to be overcome in deploying responsive space. "Session 10: Europe’s Role in Shaping the Future of Space: Leveraging strengths for global leadership" - " Europe has always been at the forefront of advocating for best practices in various critical aspects of space activities, notably in areas such as safety, security, sustainability, and international cooperation. In the current, increasingly complex, strategic and vulnerable environment both in space and on Earth, promoting these core values and principles is not only essential for fostering responsible space exploration but can also be a key element in promoting Europe as a credible leader in the global space ecosystem. Against the backdrop of the EUSL but also looking more broadly at the way in which Galileo and Copernicus have developed as global benchmarks and are used by international partners all over the world, and at how ESA has collaborated with international partners in multiple areas, including in space exploration and scientific missions; this session will look at key European strengths, and at how these can be leveraged to foster international partnerships and position Europe as a global partner in the international space field. Well said: ”The importance of space technologies and services is widely understood from the perspective of society's functions and preparedness. Space services and data can be used to monitor the impacts of climate change, provide navigation services and solutions for improving telecommunications connections. In a geopolitically tightened situation, the importance of space for security and defence has also risen to the EU agenda in a new way.” SpaceFinland .
SpaceFinland gives a look at Finnish space sector companies and research as well as the Finnish space administration.

The event might be over, but we are still inspired by what we heard recently. This year, the European Space Forum took place in Brussels for the fourth time centering around the topics of sustainability, competitiveness and the importance of being able to independently access and use space as a strategic asset. We were very interested to listen to the priorities of the EU Council Presidencies, in which the Belgium as the outgoing one highlighted the need to strengthen security and resilience, while also looking at the competitiveness of the #EU space sector. The incoming presidency Hungary highlighted the benefit of space for EU SMEs that can become global leaders in their field, but also stressed the need for a peaceful cooperation in space of all nations. The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) outlined space as a strategic domain that faces important sustainability issues. Namely: Overcrowding in certain orbits and Space Debris as well as security challenges. The European Commission set out its goals around IRIS² and the upcoming space law, that can be expected in early 2025 – focusing on resilience, security and sustainability. Throughout the two days of the conference we heard calls for more competitiveness by various space actors to overcome global challenges for the European Industry. Furthermore the EU was called to lead by example and set ambitious sustainability targets that can serve as a catalyst for further global regulation. We were also happy to take a quick picture with our colleagues of DLR GfR mbH and have a quick catch-up on EU topics around Galileo. #space #sustainability #satellitenavigation #gnss #galileo #iris2

For those operating, and also starting out, in the European Space arena this below report is a must read. What are your views on the key short, medium and long term recommendations made in the report. In my view then can be summarised as: Do now (1-3 years) • Remove ESA's geographical return principle to modernize procurement and reduce fragmentation. • Create a Single Market for space with common EU legislation and standards. • Improve access to finance for space SMEs and startups to foster growth. • Introduce European preference rules to scale up EU space companies. • Exploit synergies between space and defense policies to boost industry growth. • Create an EU framework for launchers to ensure autonomous access to space. Do soon (3-5 years) • Reform space governance to reduce complexity and improve coordination. •Establish a multi-purpose EU Space Fund to support joint procurement and innovation. •Promote access to international space markets by removing trade barriers. •Do the planning for the long term (5 years +) •Define joint strategic priorities for space research and innovation. At OLM - Orbital Launch Means we’re going to be in the thick of this, planning the newest spaceport destinations and infrastructure.
