“Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?” Avril Lavigne probably wasn’t talking about a “complicated” patchwork of U.S. state employment laws. But we will! Join Matthew O'Rourke and Adam Walker as they highlight the types of state laws that create the most heartburn and potential liability for employers who cross state lines. We’ll run the gamut—from job posting, through termination, and beyond. Future Employment Claims Can Be Settled, But Clear Wording Is Key A recent court ruling confirms that you can settle future employment claims in a settlement agreement, even if the employee continues working for you. Here's the catch: 🟣Specificity is key: The agreement must clearly outline the specific issue(s) leading to the settlement. 🟣No blanket waivers: You can't simply waive "all future claims." 🟣Clear language: The wording must be unambiguous, leaving no room for misinterpretation. This decision emphasises the importance of careful wording in settlement agreements. Need help with your employment contracts or settlement agreements?
