Curious case of Reliance (or rather say strategic brilliance of Reliance):
In past few years Reliance has got deep into consumer tech - Jio, JioMart, JioCinema, Ajio, etc.
It’s looking like a hardcore consumer tech company but it’s not, it’s DNA is actually supply side, which is an afterthought in consumer Tech discussions.
People tend to think UX, design, marketing, and often vaguely defined “consumer experience” are the main things you need to crack in consumer tech.
Reliance is not good at any.
Their UX, Product, Support, everything sucks.
But then why they win the consumer space?
That’s because of Strategy, which Reliance is extremely good at - their perspective of consumer experience is laser focussed on value.
They deliver such high value to the consumer that everything else becomes a nice to have.
But what does that even mean?
They essentially lower down the cost to consumer far below anyone else.
But then how come they are so profitable too at the same time?
Because they are extremely good at dominating, and often monopolizing supply.
Reliance is one of those rare companies that start from deepest end of supply, and then move forward to the consumer side (while others start from consumer side and integrate backwards),
e.g. they first built the massive fibre network and then launched mobile services, they first build the wholesale distribution and then launched the grocery services, they first gobbled up the brands and then launched e-commerce.
This is not new, this was perfected by Sir Dhirubhai himself, when he first built the chemical production, then monopolized polyester production (with chemicals), and then entered into making clothes for consumer (with polyester), undercutting everyone else on price (afterall even his competitors had to buy raw materials from him only).
They don’t just crack supply well, they almost always monopolize it, leaving no room for any risk in their consumer side entry.
This strategy works great, and it’s almost as risk-free as it can get.
However, there is one downside to this strategy - it takes a roadmap that spans across generations - Reliance doesn’t have any problem with that
and that essentially is Reliance’s unfair advantage against it’s competitors.
