A story of how I almost gave up and why we still keep going. When I joined Walk&Win, let’s just say - the reactions were mixed. As someone who has had experience both as a founder and as someone managing programs for founders, I was quickly reminded how easy it is for people to share opinions on what you do (just like I did as a mentor before) and how challenging it is to actually run the business. We’ve been told anything from “this idea is not original” to “why would anyone pay for this”, and some much more vulgar comments I’ve personally received in my time in customer support while attempting to understand users’ feedback more closely - I might share some in the future when the “statute of limitations” passes. We graduated from a local accelerator, and though our pitch was good during the Demo Day, we were quickly humbled when the VCs said they would only consider us if we had anywhere from $5 to $20K MRR (understandable, but still - ouch). I’d be lying if I said I’ve personally not been close to giving up on the project myself. But here is what has kept me going. In less than 2 months of us launching and a low marketing budget, we had over 4k installs, over half of which remained as active users. Over 40% of our daily active users joined our walking competitions (March). But more importantly, I had never seen such a loyal and committed user base before. From people literally “stalking” each others’ step counts to others asking to return certain rewards that we ran out of in our marketplace because they keep using the app to get them. Is the product or our model perfect? No Did I think it would be easy to successfully launch a business giving my prior experience? Yes Did that actually happen? I guess, time will tell. As fellow founders will relate, it is easy to get caught up in daily operations and slightly ignore an important part of why this business was started - and that is to help businesses as well as our users.
