BlueChip Student’s Post

The Dreaded Skills Gap...... If you don't feel like you have the skills to break into finance or tech here are some actionable steps to get yourself up to speed. No LinkedIn filler just advice! 1.) Lock in on the basics. Know financial statements, valuation techniques (for both companies and projects), International finance (especially FX rates), and familiarize yourself with the rules of accounting (sorry finance majors you gotta do it). Speciality courses that align with the industry you want to work in are also helpful (i.e. manufacturing finance, energy finance, etc.) 2.) Have basic computer and data skills. Be good at excel (if you find yourself using your mouse to "click-edit" a cell then you are not good at it). Practice building models and try to use it as much as possible to get familiar with it. Learning SQL or Python is also helpful for working with large datasets. The more ways you can learn how to glean insights from data the more valuable you are to the industry. 3.) Get good at talking to people. Often being a genuine person who can communicate both naturally and professionally is a valuable skill. This also includes having empathy for those around you and figuring out how to create efficiencies that save others time (rather than giving them more work). Everybody loves the person that saves them time & hates the person that always asks for something! Ok now for the shameless plug. If you have not yet signed up for Sunday's workshop do it now! If you are serious about breaking into finance or tech this session is a must attend (and it's free).
