The "Fit" interview is one of the most important and ambiguous interviews to prepare for. Often these interviews are conducted by a hiring manager or someone that you may be working with. As a candidate it is important that you can convey your value to the particular team you will be (potentially) working for. Here are some tips to do so: 1.) Research the company and team you are interviewing for. What is their function within the business? What are the values/mission of the firm? And most importantly how do these values intersect with your own? 2.) Have (insightful) questions prepared about the business and team you are interviewing for. I recommend you go through the exercise of writing down an extensive list of questions from really basic to really detailed. Then pick the 5 to 10 best questions on that list on have them in your back pocket for the interview. 3.) Have a structured response to behavioral questions. It is often recommended for business students seeking an entry level position to use the STAR method for answering interview question (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Practice responses to commonly asked behavioral questions so that you can work on sounding natural. Although your response is structured you don't want it to sound robotic.

The Dreaded Skills Gap...... If you don't feel like you have the skills to break into finance or tech here are some actionable steps to get yourself up to speed. No LinkedIn filler just advice! 1.) Lock in on the basics. Know financial statements, valuation techniques (for both companies and projects), International finance (especially FX rates), and familiarize yourself with the rules of accounting (sorry finance majors you gotta do it). Speciality courses that align with the industry you want to work in are also helpful (i.e. manufacturing finance, energy finance, etc.) 2.) Have basic computer and data skills. Be good at excel (if you find yourself using your mouse to "click-edit" a cell then you are not good at it). Practice building models and try to use it as much as possible to get familiar with it. Learning SQL or Python is also helpful for working with large datasets. The more ways you can learn how to glean insights from data the more valuable you are to the industry. 3.) Get good at talking to people. Often being a genuine person who can communicate both naturally and professionally is a valuable skill. This also includes having empathy for those around you and figuring out how to create efficiencies that save others time (rather than giving them more work). Simple steps you can use to reach out to a recruiter that you aren't connected to! Target Recruiter Groups: Join active LinkedIn groups with a high concentration of recruiters in your field. Look for groups discussing hiring trends or specific job roles. Get Noticed: Actively participate in discussions. Share valuable insights and engage with comments, especially those from recruiters. This establishes your credibility and gets you on their radar. Connect and Showcase Value: Once you've interacted in the group, send a personalized message to a recruiter you'd like to connect with. Briefly mention the group discussion and highlight a relevant skill or experience that showcases your value (e.g., "In the recent discussion on [topic], I noticed your comment about [specific skill]. I have a strong background in [skill] with a proven track record of [achievement]"). Sending the Message: While some groups allow direct messaging, others might not. Here's how to navigate that: If Direct Messaging is Allowed: Look for a "Message" button on the recruiter's profile within the group. If Direct Messaging is Unavailable: You can still connect! Briefly mention the recruiter by name in a relevant group discussion and tag them in your comment. This sparks a conversation without needing direct messaging. Remember, keep your message concise and professional. Focus on the value you bring and build a genuine connection before making any specific requests.

Alright Students! Earnings season has come to a close. It's important to keep up with the reporting of the companies you're interested in working for. This is not only a critical exercise for interview prep, but it also gives you context for how the company expects to operate its business moving forward. One question you should always be prepared to answer when interviewing with a hiring manager is: 'What product or business area should we focus on next?' While there are an infinite number of potential answers you can give, the key to answering this question is to have a solid argument backed by evidence and an overall understanding of that company's values (often found in the company's own financial and mission statements). So you made it past the automated systems and have secured a call with a recruiter. Congratulations! So what next? Well now the real process begins make sure you do the following immediately. 1.) Respond to the recruiters request (often to hop on a call) within 48 hours. Create a prompt and respectful response that proposes MULTIPLE time slots that you are willing to meet/call. 2.) Know your resume backwards and forwards. Calls with recruiters are more often or not about 2 things: - Who are you? AND - Would you be a good fit for the position? To answer the first question you will most likely need to run the recruiter through your resume. This often means studying your own resume beforehand and practicing running through your experience and qualifications. You should also have anecdotes that are not on the resume but related to the job you are applying to. The Goal is not to be caught off guard if a recruiter asks you to do this. 3.) Be inquisitive and open. Often the recruiter will run you through what they know about the role (title, location, team, manager, etc.). Make sure to ask questions to get a clear understanding of the role and be open to how they respond if it doesn't 100% match your expectations. Also keep in mind that the recruiter doesn't have all the answers, but they are always willing to follow up with the hiring manager for you! 4.) Don't be nervous. Ok this sounds easier than it is, but seriously don't be nervous for these calls. Also long as you have done some background research on the company and studied your resume you are as prepared as you can be. Recruiters are often the most personable people in the company (otherwise why work in recruiting lol) and super easy to talk to. Before your call take a deep breath and remind yourself that you got this!
