This redesign drove $300M in annual sales. All because of just ONE critical change.. Spindrift Beverage Co, Inc.’s core differentiator is its use of real fruit juice. But its original design had blunders that completely missed the mark on conveying that identity. 🚩 The packaging had a small, dripping fruit image that didn’t convey freshness 🚩 The phrase “fresh squeezed” was generic and overused 🚩 The term “No sugar added” made it look like a diet drink In 2016, Spindrift overhauled its packaging to align with its core message. ✅ Centered a bold, appealing fruit image for instant visual impact ✅ Replaced “fresh squeezed” with “real squeezed fruit” ✅ Added “Yup, that’s it” to show the simplicity of real ingredients ✅ Filled the lower half of the can with vibrant color to evoke freshness ✅ Switched “seltzer” to “sparkling water” to position the brand as modern and premium The result? A $300M increase in annual sales! The lesson here is simple: When consumer attention span falls down to less than 3 seconds, your packaging’s got to be stronger and bolder. Oh, the grand world of food and beverage marketing, where every new flavor twist or packaging tweak is hailed as the next big "innovation." Today, I stumbled upon another LinkedIn post gushing about an earth-shattering breakthrough: a lab-generated imitation of an original, natural, iconic product... now in a can with a hint of added flavor. Groundbreaking. FFS - Calling every minor update an "innovation" doesn't just stretch the word's meaning; it practically snaps it in half. It's as if some marketers are so ensconced in their corporate echo chambers that they believe diluting the product and putting in it a different package is akin to reinventing the wheel. To all my fellow marketing nerds, save terms like "innovation" for changes that genuinely shake up the industry. Because let's face it, when every new product variation is billed as a breakthrough, it doesn't just sound pompous—it tells the public that we're all living in a fantasy land of our own buzzwords. And to consumers, a small portion of us hear you. When you hear words like "innovation" thrown around like confetti, we know it makes you want to gag.
