As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, I was one of the table hosts at Getting the Gig this past Sunday. I'm not sure why I'm always surprised at this, but I came out of the session feeling revitalized, and with more clarity on my own path forward. Ironically, I was there to share about my experience with, and provide my feedback to, the attendees, but in the process I also gained wisdom.
Many of the attendees were there to gain more insight as they continue searching for the right opportunity in the music and entertainment industry. What came up often was the idea of strengthening your own story, and what matters to you, so that you can push through the noise to find the right fit. This obviously ignores the elephant in the room, which is that it seems damn hard to land any kind of position in this industry at the current moment! Despite this, it's still so important to take the time to define your values, and ultimately, your goals at this moment.
A large part of the search is not just the value that you're bringing to a potential employer with your past achievements, but also knowing how to convey what you've achieved, and knowing what to parts to focus on. We should all be capable of telling our own stories in a compelling manner. If you're just starting out in this field, there is still a ton of life (and work) experience that you're bringing with you, and this should be a part of your story too.
Obviously, the stakes change if you're already employed (whether industry-related or not) while in the job search, versus not being employed at all. We all have to be able to survive and meet our most basic needs, and a lot will depend on whether these are being met. I mention this only because it can be so easy to dish out advice from the comfort of a steady paycheck, when every individual's journey can be so complex and specific to them. This is why if I ever talk about re-framing the job search and not only focusing on looking for potential employers, but also for potential clients to build up your own business (freelance work,) I'm taking into consideration whether that individual even has the bandwidth to be able to take this approach.
There is so much to share on this topic, but I'll leave this for future posts. I just wanted to extend my gratitude and understanding to all of the attendees. It's not an easy path to be on, and there are not a lot of clear cut answers while your on it. Just don't forget to always go back and define your roots so that you begin to connect with the opportunities that are right for you. For most of us, it's the love for the music, and the movies, and the art, that first sent us down this path. Keeping this in focus will renew your energy, but it's also a reminder that those you're connecting with, however long or short their list of achievements, most likely started down this path for the very same reasons.

This was announced a couple of days ago, but I had to get it out there to my circle before the weekend hits. A big thanks to Christine Osazuwa for continuing to put together events like this.
For those of you in the midst of a job search (for whatever reason) in the entertainment industry, this latest series could prove to be a very valuable resource. Let’s face it: finding a job in Denmark is not easy.
You have sent hundreds of CVs and applications just to find an automated email saying, “Thank you, but we have decided to go with another candidate” every time.
😖 You feel depleted.
😖 Sad.
😖 And your confidence has paid.
How do I know?
Because I have been there.
I am a woman who create her own opportunities so I created a community where internationals from the film industry and Danes could meet, collaborate, and network.
And you know what? It has worked!
Internationals and Danes from the film industry mingle in one place.
The next event is on September 5th, and we have amazing, inspiring speakers.
💫 A filmmaker who opened his own creative studio.
💫 A film producer who opened his own production company.
💫 A project manager who found her place at the CPH:DOX film festival.
They have had their ups and downs but have entered the Danish workforce. How? They will tell us all about it on September 5th.
You either find your place or create your own, but never give up!
