Europe's Largest Vertical Garden: A Living Proof That It's Possible! 🌿 All it takes is courage and commitment to redesign our cities for a healthier, climate-friendly future. The Kö-Bogen II project in Düsseldorf, Germany, is setting new standards in urban planning and climate protection. With 30,000 Trees Spanning 8 Kilometers, this incredible building is like a vertical forest in the heart of the city. This building – or more accurately, this ecosystem – does more than provide space for people. It absorbs CO2, filters pollution, and reduces temperatures in the surrounding area. The plant-covered walls act like natural insulation, saving energy, improving air quality, and providing a home for local wildlife. Most importantly, it brings life back into the heart of the city. Designed by Christoph Ingenhoven and ingenhoven associates, this project shows how we can transform our urban landscapes into healthier, greener places. This isn't just a building - it's proof that we can make our cities better places to live. And it all starts with the courage to think differently about how we shape our urban spaces. At BIOTONOMY, we are inspired by projects like Kö-Bogen II and excited to see more cities embrace Nature Based Solutions that bring real benefits to both people and the planet. Thank you to Christoph Ingenhoven and his incredible team for being true pioneers and having the courage to bring such an inspiring project to life. The challenge is real, but so is the opportunity. Let's use this opportunity to transform our cities beyond our imaginations. Would you like to see a vertical forest in your city? Share this inspiring project in you network and show everyone that it’s possible – and that it’s already happening. #biotonomy #verticalgarden #sustainablecities #naturebasedsolutions

RIJNVLIET GOES TO BRUSSELS - Rijnvliet, the innovative residential neighborhood in Utrecht, has been selected to participate in the poster session of case studies at the NetworkNature EU Annual Event 2024, themed "Busting Myths: People with Nature." The NetworkNature initiative supports the global Nature-based Solutions (NbS) community by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange at local, regional, and international levels. Through its resources and platforms for research, policy-making, and innovation, NetworkNature aims to amplify the impact of NbS, driving transformative change and helping to reverse biodiversity loss. Rijnvliet, a project that seamlessly integrates nature and community, is a leading example of Nature-based Solutions (NbS). The neighborhood is renowned for its sustainable design, featuring a 15-hectare food forest with over 1,000 fruit trees and 220 species of edible plants. This initiative not only enhances urban biodiversity but also serves as a model for participatory design, where local residents played an active role in shaping a living space that exists in harmony with nature. The edible neighborhood will be presented as a case study demonstrating how people and nature can coexist and thrive together, challenging the myth that humanity and the natural environment are fundamentally at odds. The project underscores the importance of nature regeneration, community governance, and the economic valuation of natural spaces in fostering a more sustainable future. We are happy that Rijnvliet will gain a valuable international platform to showcase its experiences, share best practices, and inspire similar initiatives around the world. Rijnvliet was commissioned by Gemeente Utrecht. The urban plan was designed by De Zwarte Hond; the layout of the landscape as edible neighborhood was designed and elaborated by Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners together with Æ Food Forestry Development in co-creation with inhabitants. #rijnvliet #naturebasedsolutions #urbansustainability #foodforest #edibleneighborhood #networknature2024 #sustainabledesign #natureandcommunity #urbanbiodiversity #participatorydesign #natureregeneration #communitygov

This before-after illustration shows a rural area in Flanders, Belgium. It was commissioned by zoom architects. They worked together along with Landscape architect Leen Vanthuyne and Callebaut architecten to renew the old farmhouse and the surrounding area. In the picture, you can see how the environment has been changed to be more natural and eco-friendly. In the new vision the farmhouse becomes a place where people with disabilities can live and work. The circular pond, which was once used for defense, is being restored. This will definitely boost the biodiversity. The fields around the farmhouse are being turned into hay meadows, orchards, vegetable gardens, berry bushes, and greenhouses. This way the community can grow and produce organic food that can be sold locally. The whole area is being made safer for bikes and pedestrians to encourage eco-friendly travel. The larger pond is being turned into a robust ecosystem for water animals. The sustainable management of the old meanders and adjacent grasslands enables it to effectively retain excess water following periods of heavy rainfall. Finally there is the idea to plant new trees to turn the fields into forests. This will make the area healthier for nature and the people who live there. #nature #sustainable #forests #illustration #future #landscapearchitecture #organic #bio #localfood #ecosystem #ecofriendly #organic #permaculture #illustrator #artist #waterretention #Belgium #Flanders

At Stepladder , Studio 185 , LongStoryShort, and Beyond CGI, we're lucky enough to work with a diverse clientele who genuinely care about their impact on the environment. Together, we always strive to integrate nature into our projects and communicate the importance of having best-in-class green credentials. We hope this encourages a renewed sense of health and well-being in these built-up areas and raises awareness of urban environments' health challenges. Ultimately, we hope it encourages more considerate, sustainable development in the future. Our team at The Avenue Group were deeply inspired by Natural History Museum’s article on the indispensable role of green spaces in city life. We feel inspired to continue staying informed and proactive. Upon learning about the staggering nine million annual deaths due to air pollution, we were struck by the urgent need to advocate for incorporating vegetation around city buildings to combat the concerning rise in temperatures in built-up areas. Green spaces not only benefit adults but also provide an excellent environment for city-born children to play. This allows them to reconnect with nature, reducing signs of depression and ADHD. Nature’s holistic impact through urban environments is evident in the benefits it offers to all age groups. We have a long way to go to achieve a healthy green environment in the property industry. However, the long-term benefits couldn’t be clearer. Read below for Natural History Museum's article on green spaces in cities and contact Stepladder to see how our expertise can help you incorporate aspects of nature into the busy cities in which you operate. For now though, where shall we put that plant?

Here's a clip of Oliver speaking at Grand Designs on a panel with Kevin McCloud. The theme shared here explores the potential of approaching new housing development in a more wholisitic and integrated way. Designing neighbourhoods which are ecologically designed to: - Manage water responsibly by Collecting, cleaning and storing for the homes and gardens. - Enhance landscapes in harmony with nature providing long-term maintenance food solutions. - - - Build homes which passively capture heat and regulate temperature and ventilation by effective orientation and material use There are ways how we can utilise nature-based principle to build truly smart-homes designed to last and leave a abundant legacy. These topics are just a few key parts of a new way of we could be approaching how we build communities with more responsibility, setting the scene for regeneration and strong resilience. 🌿✨ #GrandDesignsLive #KevinMcCloud #EcoHousing #SustainableLiving #ResilientCommunities #RegenerativeDesign #PermacultureDesign #EcologicalArchitecture #GreenBuilding #FutureOfHousing #WaterManagement #FoodForests #Agroecology #ClimateSmartBuilding #NatureInspiredDesign
