Red intensity implies a >6°C temperature change in both directions. India's June temperature rises by 2-3°C over the 20-year period (2013-2033) in some places, whereas it should dip 4-6°C or more in the centre of India from west to east. November will be hotter in the north and northeast of India. Uttar Pradesh and northern Bihar will have patches of over 6°C heat. Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and northern Bengal will see 4-6°C warmer temperatures. We often miss the issue of soil pollution and groundwater contamination. While we do track the status of our ground water, only recently we have started building our understanding on the extent and severity of groundwater contamination. The findings have been alarming, and many studies have linked the contaminated ground water to the occurrence of cancers. In December 2015, a report was submitted to the Ministry of Environment & Forests & Climate Change (MoEFCC) captioned Inventory and Mapping of Probably Contaminated Sites in India. This report identified 320 contaminated sites. Researchers from IIT Delhi published status on more than 60 dump sites contaminated by disposal of municipal solid waste, outlined remediation efforts needed and articulated challenges such as financial support and lack of standards and guidelines for remediation. But the problem of contamination is not just due to industrial wastes and municipal dump sites. It is also due to high consumption of questionable and spurious insecticides and fertilizers in the agriculture. Use of contaminated water for irrigation is yet another contributor. The FAO report titled ‘Soil Pollution: A Hidden Reality’ was released in 2018 at a two-day global symposium in Rome. This report, which is a synthesis of existing scientific research, identifies six soil-related human health risks and three of them are linked to soil pollution. These are soil contaminated with dangerous elements (for example, arsenic, lead and cadmium), organic chemicals like PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) or pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics or endocrine disruptors. But then these “demons lying beneath” do not stop there. There are economic impacts too. India’s exports of grains, fruits and vegetables are now under international scanner and rejections of wheat and rice consignment due to contamination reasons are increasingly seen. Examples are cases of pesticides such as carbosulfan, chlorpyriphos, endosulfan, and quinalphos. If the farmers use these pesticides, their produce in fresh or processed form will have traces of such chemicals and will face rejection in countries such as the US, the EU and Japan. Remember – what goes to the soil and percolates down, gives only an illusion that the problem is out of sight. There is a clear indication of Global leaders' intention on transforming India into a Global hub of supply chain. After Technology sector, now the renewable sector is gearing up in this domain. There is general perception across globe that Indian workforce is capable of handling complex operations which makes India a reliable partner for global companies. One of the main reasons for India’s growing prominence in the supply chain industry is its steady supply of skilled labour. India is expected to house 1 billion working-age adults by 2030. This growing supply chain also brings new sustainability challenges, as ethical supply chain practices become a greater and more immediate priority for businesses. What does “Continuity Certainty” mean in the context of local artisanal producers? Local artisanal producers and products are an important part of our New India economy. However, this sector is disadvantageously placed in the current ecosystem, faces a constant cash flow squeeze and in many cases is leading to dying of the art and the traditional production capacity. Local artisanal producers live in constant uncertainty which is a double edged sword. Uncertainty plays with the producer's mind and leads to lower prices and lower sales. Strong sales and margins happen when the producer confidently promotes the product. Hence the foundation of continuity certainty in this sector is a supportive ecosystem which connects these products to discerning and #vocalforlocal consumers. eSamudaay presented our continuity certainty through collaboration solution at the state of Uttar Pradesh's "One District, One Product" initiative. This local product to global market ecosystem works in the following steps: 🎯 Creation of local digital entrepreneurs whose function is to celebrate the product, the producer and the district. This activity creates engaging content and product information online. The content is promoted globally through social media handles of artisan curators. Artisan curators are social media influencers who have a passion for reviving the traditional art and crafts of India 🎯 Providing #AI to the producers through which they can get feedback from their customers, build relationships and develop product variants based on the "voice of customers". This feedback loop is crucial to continuity certainty by adapting to changing consumer preferences 🎯 Providing a network of product designers who augment the local entrepreneur ecosystem with talent network solutions for upgrades, new product development, marketing, strategy etc 🎯 Connecting producers digitally to Bank/NBFC credit as well as decentralized finance solutions. The decentralized finance solution that is most likely to work is pre-paid commissioned production (customised orders direct from customers) 🎯 Lastly and most importantly, creating a peer-network of producers that exchange information and knowledge We stressed on the team at the Government of UP that this is an ecosystem development project that needs to get the appropriate long term focus. While sales is the final measurement of success, the leading indicators are the number of people joining the ecosystem, the content that is posted on social media handles and the engagement the content is getting online. We have seen the rise in consumers across the world that are looking for products with a story. COP 29: India Remains Among the Top Performers in the Climate Change Performance IndexIndia ranks 10th in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI 2025), despite dropping two spots. This ranking is largely attributed to its low per capita emissions and significant growth in renewable energy. The CCPI 2025 report, released at the annual UN climate conference, leaves the top three positions unfilled. Denmark occupies the fourth place, followed by the Netherlands, while the two largest emitters, China and the US, rank very low at 55th and 57th, respectively. Published by think tanks Germanwatch, New Climate Institute, and Climate Action Network International, the CCPI tracks the progress of the world's largest emitters in terms of emissions, renewable energy efforts, and climate policy. The 63 countries assessed in the CCPI, along with the European Union, are responsible for 90 percent of global emissions. India's per capita emissions are reported at 2.9 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), significantly lower than the global average of 6.6 tCO2e. As the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter and the fastest-growing major economy in the world, India has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 and aims to reach 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030, according to Indian official data. CCPI experts note that India has made considerable progress in renewable energy policy over the past year, particularly with large-scale solar power projects and the launch of the Rooftop Solar Scheme. The report highlights that India has also introduced energy efficiency standards and advanced in electric vehicle deployment, especially concerning two-wheelers. The report leaves the top three spots vacant as no country has performed well enough across all index categories to receive a very high overall rating. Argentina ranks 59th and has faced significant setbacks after withdrawing from COP29 and possibly pulling out of the Paris Agreement of 2015. Its newly elected president denies the existence of human-made climate change, contrary to scientific consensus. Denmark ranks at the top (technically fourth place), followed by the Netherlands and the UK. The UK, noted as this year's biggest climber, has benefitted from phasing out coal and the government's commitment to halt new licenses for fossil fuel projects, according to the report. China, the world's largest emitter, ranks 55th, a significant drop. Despite promising plans and measures, the largest economy in Asia remains heavily dependent on coal and lacks adequate climate targets. The US, the second-largest emitter, is positioned in 57th place among the very low performers. Kerala SAPCC 2023-2030 is one of the perfect blend of climate science, Kerala Government proactive measure and in house capacity building. A core group of 👥 220 nodal officers from 91 sectoral stakeholder departments through three tiers of consultation sessions has helped to devise this Action Plan. Key Insights: 🌡 Projections show a temperature increase of 1°C to 2°C under future scenarios. 💰Finance: Mitigation strategies need INR 52,238 Crore; adaptation requires INR 38,407 Crore. 🗺 Key vulnerabilities were identified in districts like Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Alappuzha. 🚗 Mitigation Strategies (2023-30) ▶ Energy efficiency improvements ▶Installation of renewable energy projects ▶Increased adoption of Electric Vehicles ▶Upgrading Transmission and Distribution infrastructure These efforts aim to avoid ~57000 ktCO2 by 2030, with an investment of INR 52,238 Crore. Kerala’s share is about 5%, with the Central Government covering 23%. 🌾 Adaptation Strategies Focused on enhancing climate resilience in agriculture, improving production practices, and building capacities of supporting institutions. Key areas include livestock, coastal fisheries, forests, health, and water resources. 📑 Why does it stand out? ▶Assessed district vulnerability across 19 parameters and classify risk levels(high-low). ▶Designed sector-specific adaptation interventions with annual budgets until 2030. ▶Dedicated capacities through dedicated bodies like the Chief Minister’s Governing Council, State Climate Change Cell, Climate Change Working Groups, District Climate Change Cells, and Sectoral Climate Change Cells. As someone deeply committed to sustainability, I find the latest UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report on electronic waste generation both insightful and thought-provoking. It's impressive to see how India is making remarkable strides towards digitalization. However, this rapid progress has also led to an increase in electronic waste, much of which is currently managed informally. This presents a reminder of the need for more sustainable practices. I believe this challenge presents a critical opportunity for businesses and stakeholders in India to innovate and lead in responsible electronic waste management. By developing robust e-waste management solutions that can keep pace with the growing volume of discarded electronics, we can mitigate the environmental impact of digitalization.
