UC San Diego Institute for Network Medicine (iNetMed) grew immensely yesterday as it got a #shot of #innovative #technologies to support #quantitative cell analyses to its existing dynamic #Centers: #PreCSN (Precision Computational Systems Network), HUMANOID: Human Organoid Center of Research Excellence (CoRE) and #ConCISE (Consortium for Cell Inspired Systems Engineering). This means that programs within the Institute [e.g., #organoid models, #cellsystems, programs in #computational #immunology and #cancertherapeutics, #precision #drugdiscovery, etc.] can now #quantify #biology with #precision and #measure the #immeasurable. The Agilent Center of Excellence in Cellular Intelligence includes a complete and modern suite of cell analyses platforms that reveal cell #fate, #state, and #trait through measurable #insights across scales. These insights are expected to unlock some of the most compelling secrets that are of foundational importance. It also brings pre- and postdoctoral #fellowships to further training and education of the next generation in modern #cellbiology. What an #incredible #timing and #direction of growth!
Agilent Technologies announces an innovative scientific collaboration with the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego), one of the top-ranked public research universities in the world, to establish the Agilent Center of Excellence (CoE) in Cellular Intelligence. The Agilent CoE, located at the UC San Diego School of Medicine will foster collaboration and innovation among researchers from Agilent and UC San Diego, and other institutions and industry partners. The CoE will serve as a hub for academic and pharma/biopharma researchers in the region, enabling access to vital analytical instrumentation and providing education, training, and application development opportunities. Choosing to become a doctor is a noble pursuit, but it’s no easy journey. It takes years of study and practice, as well as a bit of luck. For Tony Phan ‘22, a former student of the VMBS' biomedical sciences graduate program, perseverance was another important part of becoming a doctor. Big news from the TCU research community! Supported by grants from The National Institutes of Health, Welch Foundation, ACS PRF and the TCU-routed Flatley Foundation, this highly collaborative project highlights the power of teamwork in science. Four chemistry and biology undergraduate co-authors, graduate students, a post-doc and a TCU medical student worked together to tackle an important challenge in Alzheimer’s research. Their findings demonstrate a method to decorate molecules to cross the blood-brain barrier—key for Alzheimer’s drug development. These molecules activate intracellular mechanisms that protect cells from oxidative stress, a driver of neurodegenerative diseases. This work is a testament to the incredible opportunities at TCU for innovative, cross-disciplinary research. Check out the paper here! #TCU_CSE

Major institutions in the Downtown BioMedical District continue to support growth and innovation through recent patent activity. In 2023, researchers secured 11 patents between the LSU and Tulane University's Downtown campuses. Six patents were awarded toLSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans last year, with the larger LSU system ranking among the top institutions to receive utility patents in the United States. On Tulane University's Downtown Campus, researchers pulled in five patents in 2023, reflecting the university’s 70% increase in biomedical and academic research over the past six years. Tulane also received many more patents from its Uptown campus. With two major institutions and a third on the way—the Xavier-Ochsner College of Medicine—Downtown is poised for a bright future in the biomedical field.
