🌟 #Congratulations to Madhubanti Mullick on receiving a prestigious and Inaugural Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the UC San Diego Agilent Center of Excellence in Cellular Intelligence! 🌟 Madhubanti’s research embodies the cutting edge of #interdisciplinary science, focusing on chasing #GPCRs in each cell of the #gut as #therapeutic #targets for #immunomodulation in #Inflammatory Bowel Disease (#IBD). With her extensive training in GPCR biology during her doctoral training and this exciting #fellowship, she’s poised to break new ground in this critical area of research. Using a comprehensive suite of high-throughput #technologies, Madhubanti will test GPCR modulation across various #cell types in the inflamed #colon. Her work is powered by a state-of-the-art #AI/ML model developed at the UC San Diego Center for Precision Computational Systems Network (PreCSN), which predicts with #mathematical precision the most promising targets from over 830 GPCR-target class candidates — pinpointing not just which GPCR to target (turns out, only a handful are worth it!), but also the specific #cell type and #MoA to focus on. Her studies at the UC San Diego Agilent Center of Excellence in Cellular Intelligence will integrate cutting-edge technologies to evaluate how #GPCR engagement influences disease-driving features in each cell type, providing novel insights into the precise mechanisms of GPCR #pharmacology. UC San Diego Institute for Network Medicine (iNetMed) is proud to present its latest reason to celebrate our "bootcamp" program: #Congratulations to Mahitha Shree Anandachar, a stellar second year graduate student from the UC San Diego @Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Program who is pursuing her doctoral thesis in the laboratory of Pradipta Ghosh, for being awarded a prestigious American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship! Her research focuses on understanding how infections can reprogram innate immune cells' ability to handle #cholesterol, impacting the development of #atherosclerosis. More specifically, Mahitha’s work dives into the role of a fascinating new class of molecules called GEMs (Guanine-nucleotide exchange modulators), which coordinate #signaling downstream of #pathogen-sensing receptors like #TLRs. Turns out, that these molecules may hold the key to understanding the intricate "crosstalk" between #infection-induced #immune responses and cholesterol metabolism. By exploring these mechanisms, Mahitha’s studies aim to shed light on why and how our gut microbes influence our susceptibility to heart disease. Importantly, her research could also provide valuable insights into #therapeutic strategies to intercept harmful signals and pave the way for new #treatments. Kenny is on a mission to explore phage clearance and test various compounds to treat diseases, focusing on inflammation and macrophages in different environments, including co-cultures with epithelial cells and specifically Crohn’s disease patients. Kenny's favorite instrument is the eSight xCelligence, which he has affectionately nicknamed Eve. Inspired by the character from Wall-E, with its sleek, xtra-terrestrial look and feel, Eve could easily be mistaken for a gadget from a sci-fi movie! This week, we’re featuring Courtney Tindle, Program Manager and Director of Operations, HUMANOID Center of Research Excellence (CoRE) from UC San Diego, UC San Diego HUMANOID: Center of Excellence in Human Organoid Research, and UC San Diego Agilent Center of Excellence in Cellular Intelligence, who has affectionately named her Agilent Seahorse Sheldon. And no, it is not named after Dr Sheldon Cooper, theoretical physicist from the hit TV show Big Bang Theory (although that would also have been cool), but after the beloved H2O-intolerant seahorse from Finding Nemo 🐠. Sheldon the seahorse plays a crucial role in her groundbreaking research, helping to unlock new insights and drive scientific discovery, and making waves in the lab! The UC San Diego Agilent Center of Excellence in Cellular Intelligence 's weekly series--#DidYouKnow--features examples of how you can push the limits of #Measurements-#Across-#Scales. This is our 14th post of this series. #DidYouKnow that aging #myofibroblasts that refuse to die are the bad actors that propel tissue #fibrosis practically any organ in our body? To solve such a problem, we can cut #time, #cost, and #effort by getting the most out of any study if we can combine #precision grouping of patients and multiple real-time #readouts. For example, last week we posted real-time #impedance + #apoptosis (imaging Annexin V) assays that provide a #dynamic, label-free method to monitor #cell #states, #responses to #stimuli or #drugs, and #changing #fates amidst a population of cells. Today's post (👇) continues to analyze that same ongoing experiment, and thereby, 'milk the cow' (proverbial) as we added two other #readouts, cellular #senescence (shown today) and #cytokine studies (not shown on supernatants collected). WHAT WAS DONE: This is a a novel #target [discovered using #MachineLearning among other computational approaches at the Institute for Network Medicine (iNetMed)] that selectively decimates #myofibroblasts that propel fibrostenotic #CrohnsDisease is being tested. Repeated daily doses of the drug (arrows) gradually bring the initial high #impedance of the pathology driving #profibrogenic #myofibroblasts (pink/magenta) similar to that of th benign type (blue). UC San Diego HUMANOID: Center of Excellence in Human Organoid Research worked closely with UC San Diego Center for Precision Computational Systems Network (PreCSN) to conduct deep characterization of--what appears to be a surprisingly consistent (and meaningful)--two molecular subtypes!
