What knowledge is most useful for property investors in this age of ready information? Perhaps a more useful question to ask is, how will I know whether the information I'm looking at is useful? We humans aren't very comfortable with complex decision making. We look for mental shortcuts - whether consciously or otherwise - all the time. And a very common mental shortcut when it comes to property decisions is to defer to "the numbers". But. What numbers matter the most? Some people - over-analysers - gather huge amounts of data and still can't make a decision. At the other end of the spectrum, others will latch onto a statistic offered by a confident "expert" to support their quick decision. The true benefit in knowing things is being able to sort through information and determine what is relevant, what is noise, and what challenges my assumptions and might change my original opinion. This type of knowing takes years of experience, culminating in what some might call wisdom.
