🚴 Visibility in traffic is essential. The results of our survey make it clear that cycling accidents are often linked to poor lighting. This is what prompted us to run our "Be Bright, Use your Light" campaign, which raises awareness among cyclists to better protect themselves in traffic. And we're not just doing it on our own - we've enlisted the help of our brokers too. We're providing customised posters to hang in their offices as well as a variety of campaign materials for their website and social media. Together, we make sure people are aware of the dangers and that they are bright and visible on the road. 💡 Want more tips on how to cycle safely? We appreciate Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government for the national rollout of a 20mph speed limit. New data shows that, since its implementation, speeds have reduced by an average of 4mph. Some might say that a 4mph reduction in average speed doesn’t sound a lot – but it is, in road safety terms. Depending on the road, even a 1mph drop in mean speed can reduce the frequency of collisions – by about 6%. Cycling UK welcomes the news that the default 20mph is working in Wales #Betterat20mph

Cargo bikes defeat the "hard to travel with bags" barrier that we often see in studies on what prevents people from cycling. Changing our bikes to be more functional is a key to making bicycles more of a day-to-day mobility solution. VéloQuébec is hosting a talk on these: https://lnkd.in/e5pUwgRm

Trendwatching: 🇫🇷 concerning conservative politically driven news from France. Are cycling budgets going from €2 billion to zero? The Fédération des Usagères et des usagers de la Bicyclette (FUB) has found that the new government appears to have approved 0 Euros for cycling mobility infrastructure development from the new transport minister François Durovray in draft plans; cutting the notable budget for infrastructure and light mobility previously announced as "Un Plan vélo", by Elizabeth Borne in which a vision of 100'000km of bike paths was proposed nation (as compared to the Netherlands' ~35'000km). This cut also appears to have even been applied to 400 previous greenlighted 2024 projects approved for "just" €125 M in funding have now been put on hold, when up to €250 M should have been available. Whereas a very reduced maximum budget of €100M does appear in proposals, there seem to be zero proposed mechanisms for budget approvals to make the funding available. The new ruling National Rally (RN) party seems to have even proposed entire removal of funds, which was luckily rejected by parliament.

Here is a refreshing reminder that "We don't ride bikes here" offers zero impediment to rapid vehicular cycling adoption: 25% of French citizens regularly travel by bike in 2024, up from just 3% in 2019 (Just 5 years!). Whereas the first 4 years rates of adoption were gentler, in 2023 participation increased a phenomenal 48%. What happened from 2022 to 2023? The flashpoint. Cities continued on the same long-term project of providing fair and equal space for light transport. Perhaps the cultural awakening finally came that life was better and more pleasant when light mobility was given equal provision; people realised the illogical and excessive car use that had been culturally normalized was making life less pleasant that it could be. This curve is far from flattening out, with a number of telling indicators: - a majority of male users (31% of pop) vs female (19% of pop) shows this; mature multimodal cultures like the Netherlands see 29% female 27% male participation. - the age participation of French urban cyclists trends middle aged; 34% of 11-34 y.o. vs 14% of 65-85 y.o. In the Netherlands, it is the opposite: the elderly (65+) and youth (6-18) ride the longest average daily distances (over 6km) and the majority of all trips. - 8% of respondents to the French study ride an eBike. This is a lower penetration rate (showing huge value potential for french retail!) than the Netherlands, where 23% of riders use an eBike. Side note: That said, just 12% of all bikes in the nehterlands are ebikes (the 23% use vs 12% rolling fleet figure is possible because many Dutch have a city as well as one or more recreational bikes). The Netherlands' percentage of eBike sales keeps rising year-on-year, showing that this 12% is very far from a saturation point. Article in french.
