Step of the career ladder and into the career squiggle! The career squiggle is something I talk about in employability lectures and workshops. Why? Because careers don't always follow a vertical linear style of progression, nor is it something everyone aspires to. As we progress through our careers we change and jobs change. For example, you may be looking to return to work after a career break, be facing redundancy, looking to pivot into a different sector or planning on creating a portfolio style career. If either of these describe you I would recommend thinking of your career as a squiggly line as opposed to a vertical ladder. In a squiggle there are lots of twists and turns which offer opportunities and possibilities. Here are 3 ways to embrace the career squiggle: ⭐️Use your curiosity to explore career possibilities. ⭐️Consider new ways you can use your skills and strengths. ⭐️ Embrace your uniqueness and don't compare your career with the people around you. We spend over 90,000 hours of our lives at work and we owe it to ourselves to make this time as good at it can be. If you're interested in making these 90,000 hours work for you then do also follow me on Instagram at nu.careers. It's a little space I've created as we grow and learn in our careers. Rolling Meadows is where iReturn started back in 2017! Over the last four years, Jimmy, a Northrop Grumman hiring manager, has had the pleasure of interviewing, training or hiring 7 of the nearly 40 Rolling Meadows-based iReturners and feels it has been a wonderful experience across the board. “In all the cases I’ve come across, the employment gap has been a result of common life events. The common theme among all these events is what I like to call ‘managing chaos’. Plans change often around here, and having someone with the patience to understand that plans change, and chaos can be managed is incredibly helpful.” Jimmy knows the value of iReturn and knows the positive impact a manager can have on someone’s confidence as they return. “The hiring manager can be most helpful with the iReturner by being transparent, providing resources/mentors, and setting clear goals.” Are you thinking about returning to work after a current 2+ year career break? Jimmy’s advice is to take the leap! “We have the mentors to train everyone and processes to keep an individual on track – we’ve been doing this for years and we’ve refined our process down to a science. We love seeing new faces and hearing fresh perspectives!” Check out our iReturn Careers site for more information on the program and how to apply. #iReturn #Taketheleap
