Modern CPG Supply Chain professionals must contend with answering the direct to consumer portion of their business and balance that supply chain path with their brick and mortar strategy. Do we outsource the DTC solution? Do I comingle the storage of cases and eaches in my current supply chain facility? If I outsource how much will it cost? Will the vendor we selected be in business in 12 months? If I stay within my current facility, will we lose focus on the Brick and Mortar business? How do we up skill the staff to fulfill DTC? Am I geographically located in a place to support both a DTC and a B&M network? 2. How do I deliver to B&M in today’s heightened OTIF/delivery compliance environment from our retail trading partners. There is so much to consider. In our inflationary environment it’s difficult for Brands, Retailers and most importantly consumers to absorb price increases. While keeping this in mind we must also find the best solutions to deliver to retailers On Time and In Full. Going with a simple lane by lane bid process is not enough when taking into account today’s retailer prescriptive mandates. There is so much more to consider. The reputation of the carrier first and foremost. Cost to serve, Quality of service. Within the carriers’ capabilities there can be a large quality variance from lane to lane. This requires supply chain professionals to be very diligent, analyzing down to a granular level when selecting a carrier.
