Inter Terminals Sweden, in collaboration with SAS, is expanding its aviation fuel facility in the Port of Gävle by converting tanks from conventional fossil heating oil storage to a blending and storage facility for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). SAS has set an ambitious environmental target to fuel SAF equivalent to SAS’ fuel consumption in Scandinavia by 2030. To achieve this target, SAS must significantly increase the share of sustainable aviation fuel each year. This investment will contribute towards that target. The new facility will be ready for operation in summer 2024. ‘Our demand for SAF is significant, but there is a need for investments throughout the entire value chain to enable us to transition to more sustainable flights. That’s why it’s important for us to partner up and have a proactive approach to ensure a sufficient and efficient SAF value chain. SAS use of SAF today is low in comparison to our future demand and needs to increase significantly as the usage of SAF directly correlates with lower flight emissions,’ says Ann-Sofie Hörlin, head of sustainability at SAS. ‘With the proximity to Stockholm Arlanda Airport and well-developed logistics solutions for both vessels and rail, Inter Terminals is well positioned to contribute to the aviation industry’s goal of being climate-neutral by 2050. We are delighted to implement this project together with SAS,’ says Inter Terminals Sweden’s managing director Johan Zettergren. ‘Thanks to the initiative of ITS and SAS the capacity for handling SAF in Gävle will increase further. The first intercity battery trial in the UK was launched last week in a collaboration between Hitachi Rail, TransPennine Express and Angel Trains.   The TransPennine Express ‘Nova 1’ train has been retrofitted with a battery system that hopes to reduce emissions on all routes by around 30 percent. In an important step, this project aims to deliver real world evidence to form a business case around the use of battery-electric trains, reducing the costs and red tape we currently face when looking at a full electrification of the rail network.   The battery unit is reported to have an equivalent weight to that of the previous diesel engine and will be capable of achieving the same levels of acceleration.   Projects like this that can utilise current infrastructure rather than requiring a full replacement are vital. Retrofitting existing technology allows for a more immediate result and gets the conversation moving in the right direction.   It goes without saying that the long term goal would be a 100% fully electric rail system however we need to be realistic and aiming for goals that high from the get-go will only lead to delays and potential blockers. The top 10 fastest high-speed trains in Europe Since the development of the TGV, high-speed rail on the continent has steadily expanded. But what are the fastest #highspeed trains in #Europe? Europe has a long history of high-speed #trains, being an early adopter after the first high-speed #railsystem, the Tokaido Shinkansen, began operations in #Japan. Since France’s TGV network began development in the 1970s, the European high-speed rail network has grown to its current size of over 20,500km in length, including the Eurostar on the channel #tunnel and the Trans-Alpine link through the Gotthard tunnel, with a further 14,500km currently under #construction. Following the initial European services in #France, high-speed rail lines eventually grew across the continent, with notable networks now operating in #Germany, #Spain, and #Italy. Looking ahead to the future, high-speed rail is also a vital component of the great modal shift. As the world tries to transition to more #sustainable forms of travel, high-speed trains offer the perfect answer to short-haul flights, given the vastly lower #environmental impact. Indeed, some countries are already introducing measures to incentivise choosing trains over #planes, and capital investment also reflects the high-speed boom – half of the ten most expensive #construction projects in 2023 were high-speed rail #projects.
