US multinational companies have been trying for a long time to find an alternative to alcohol. Alcoholic beer has been struggling in the US especially since the pandemic. And by solving that, they make beer from marijuana leaves. Multinational company Heineken emphasizes cannabis-infused beverages rather than alcohol in its beers, even though they produced the beers in the aftermath of the pandemic and helped revive the faltering beer industry in the U.S. at the time. Because this beer is zero alcohol. Instead of alcohol, beer-like beverages are made with THC (Tetra Hydro Cannabinol), the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Known as Hi-Fi Hops (Hifi Hops Reverb THC Beverage), another US company launched this new cannabis beverage that hints at the potential of this non-alcoholic cannabis beverage. In addition to beverages made with THC, the new "beer" CBD - (CBD means does not cause the "high" that people experience when they smoke marijuana.) Also found there, non-psychoactive cannabis components are thought to have many therapeutic effects. The beer is currently available at a few marijuana dispensaries in California, where marijuana is officially legal. Anyway, even if it is valid there, I don't know if it is valid in our country. #alcohol #wine

In this excerpt from our episode with Jason Tarasek of Vicente LLP, the Minnesota cannabis expert discusses the explosion of the cannabis beverages market in the state and how THC beverages are "keeping the lights on" for a lot of the state's microbreweries:

On May 30, 2024, the CDPH issued a communication warning consumers not to drink, what it termed "illegal," a particular brand’s hemp-infused sodas alleging, among other things, that they were infused with “THC isolate.” The CDPH also stated that “Industrial hemp products are legal in California but are prohibited under state law from containing THC isolates.” While the term THC Isolate is contained in AB45, it is not defined further in the statute or in any regulations. Additionally, we are unable to identify any definition of such term and understand that the cannabinoid THC does not isolate.    While the CBA strongly supports regulations that protect consumers by ensuring safe products in the marketplace (at the state and federal levels), it views this communication as unlawful informal interpretive rulemaking and enforcement given the lack of a statutory definition for THC Isolates. We will continue to educate regulators and supporting agencies to create pathways for fair and effective regulation of the infused beverage category.

The true perspective lies not in pessimism or optimism but in a deeper understanding of evolving markets and the factual data that is becoming apparent. The fact of the matter is that recreational dispensaries and the distribution model within these recreational cannabis states are not set up for the proper delivery and handling of cannabis beverages. With the segue of the hemp market allowing cannabis beverages to sit alongside alcohol, the acceptance/embracement of the players in that industry, and the availability for cannabis beverage brands to position themselves on a national level and create this footprint ahead of federal legalization, is monumental. Cannabis is and has always been a commodity; just like sugar and flavoring that go into these drinks. April Rubin could you please try a little harder to not gaslight? Give me a break. Please check your incendiary word count, we’re nearing wild fire season. Look, this was not a mistake, or unintentional, or cluelessness. These beverages are not “laced” with thc as if this is some back alley shady dealing… can you be any more antiquated? Is there pcp in the can as well?? This non-alcoholic beverage segment is the fastest growing beverage segment across all. Consumers are becoming more informed and aware of the alternative beverage category, and guess what? They are making adult decisions to consume the beverage. Why?? Go ask them. The regulated thc infused hemp beverage market is asking to be regulated like alcohol. Reasonable regulations that account for transparency, and ultimately consumer safety, are welcome. Low dosing meaning up to 10mg is demonstrating to be a reasonable point of entry for non-traditional cannabinoid consumers. It’s not a war. This is not a fight it out and beat each other into submission. This is a grownups game and as such reasonable minds can figure it out. Are there passionate voices with different perspectives? Duh.
