Athletes are just susceptible to mental health concerns as every else — if not more so. After all, the pressure to train, compete, and ultimately win is a heavy load to carry. The same is true for equestrians, many of whom live and train in Wellington, Florida, the horse-riding capital of the world. This is so important to break down. Firstly just on the extract I smile and think ‘ me too’ but there’s a really important thing to jump into here. ‘ I cared too much ‘ ‘ the self pressure ‘ ‘ I got angry at myself ‘ 1/ First up It’s impossible to care too much. Passion means suffering. If we have a deep love for something then it guarantees as life does 3 things to quote Stutz or as Ronaldo has used previously: Constant pain / Suffering. Uncertainty Constant hard work What Tom shares here is that he had NO awareness as to why he felt this and then NO tools to manage the self. First of WHAT a gift ; Passion. However it means pain and suffering yet I’m sure that was never explained nor HOW to carry the weight of that. 2/ It leads into quote #2 : ‘ Self pressure’ Pressure translates as ‘ to be burdened by’ So to align with point one, he diding care too much HE ( the I am ) was/is a very powerful soul so he had to carry the burden of that. I think of Jordan Peterson breaking down Christianity and faith and how the message is ; to pick up your cross take on maximum responsibility and walk up the hill ‘ Again this poor young guy had no idea on ANY of this so then stumbles blindly with deep anxiety ( which is a physical reaction to fear ) without realizing what a MASSIVE gift such fear is chasing you down the road. 3/ finally ‘ I’ got angry at ‘ myself’ Say that a few times and you will see the non sense in such a statement. Who is I and who is MY This is the ultimate truth and why ‘ depression’ is so many times someone lost and confused. Who’s the ‘ I’ getting angry and who’s the ‘ MY’ ‘I’ is angry at????? The answer to everything is inside that and at that minute understanding occurs and now the individual can saddle up, know they will be in constant pain, uncertainty and constant hard work but with the self ACCEPTED. There is so so much ignorance around this subject and real healing and breakthrough occurs when we deeply understand that it’s WHO we are anc there’s no choice, no backup plan, no one coming to save us and that passion means suffering. Constant pain Uncertainty Constant hard work
Emotional welfare specialist working in pro football. Emotional intelligence advocate and developer. Founder of The Changing Room and Simply Human and Head of Welfare and senior consultant for The Player Care Group
This week on The Changing Room chatting with Paul Mortimer and I is Tom Thorpe. From 'growing up' at Manchester United to his first team debut at Old Trafford, to taking a 5 year break from football, citing poor mental health, Tom provides us with a fascinating insight into his emotional journey in football. It's also interesting to note how his current roles build on his experience and want to provide a safer place to 'grow up' within the arms of football for those he now works with. Thanks for your vulnerability and honesty Tom Thorpe, an excellent episode with valuable content. #mentalhealthinfootball #mentalhealthinsoccer #Mentalhealthinsport #footballcoaching #emotionalintelligence https://lnkd.in/ef3dJFAW https://lnkd.in/eSJQGGdU

Tottenham forward Richarlison says seeking psychological help "saved his life" "I talk about it because it saved my life. I was at rock bottom. Only players know how much pressure we're under, not only on the pitch but also off it." Psychologists do not have a silver bullet and our work is often challenging. But having players like Richarlison highlighting the work of Psychologists in sports is a motivation to carry on. #sportpsychology #footballpsychology #soccerpsychology #mentalhealthinsports #performancepsychology https://lnkd.in/dtUi3c9J
