What is the optimal fractional workload? 30 hours per week is the number I hear most often in my conversations with fractional execs. The rationale? 30 hours provides a good amount of “buffer” when a customer requires more support. Those that seem to get into a little trouble have their utilization maxed from go, without room for error. So when one company needs a little more “air support,” which inevitably will happen, the engagement bleeds into other projects or their personal lives- either of which is no bueno. The above also underscores the importance of setting expectations early (i.e. when you are available and when you are not).
It depends on what stage of your career the fractional is at. If I’m delivering great value, I dont need more than 15 or 20.
Beau Billington I would say 30-32 hours. Like you said the buffer can help with "air support" but it also gives the fractional exec time to do admin work and, depending on their situation, business development work to find future opportunities.
