Having a nostalgic Friday and thinking back on #esports, and how it's grown and changed so much over the last 10 years. Social media and creative content has been fundamental in this. Here are my top 5 most memorable moments in esports and how they killed it on social media at the time: Fortnite World Cup 2019 – #FortniteWorldCup 🏆 Experiencing the first of Epic Games' #FortniteWorldCup back in 2019 was a standout moment for me. Watching 16-year old Bugha take home $3m+ was insane - this was the largest ever payout for a single player in esports. Epic's social campaign shared highlights, player stories, and fan reactions, uniting the community through shared excitement. It created an electrifying atmosphere that drew in millions of viewers. Probably one of the most hype things I've ever seen! CoD Champs 2016 – #CWL2020 🔫 Call of Duty is still a giant today in esports, but I feel nothing will ever top the crowd's passion and fan engagement on socials back in the day. Watching underdog team 'Splyce' storm their way through to the finals was incredible - defeating Team Kaliber, FaZe Clan and Rise Nation at the time. The social media buzz around their unexpected victories was massive, with fans rallying behind Splyce and amplifying their underdog story. Everyone loves an underdog, right?! League of Legends – #WorldsCollide 🌍 Riot Games’ annual World Championship is an esports spectacle, and the #WorldsCollide campaign brought fans together from across the globe. With interactive content, behind-the-scenes footage, and live updates, this campaign turned the championship into a trending topic worldwide. 'Worlds Collide' by Nicky Taylor set the stage for other non-Worlds-related musical projects from Riot too. Riot Games leveraged social media to deliver immersive and engaging content that kept fans on the edge of their seats! S1mple's at IEM Cologne 2021 🎯 S1mple is probably the greatest CS:GO player of all time. I've had this conversation with multiple people within my team and outside, most notably with Nik Turner on how people spell 'esports'. It's a pet peeve for me and I know for Nick as well 😂 on the many ways people misspell 'esports'. Why does it matter? Short answer, legitimacy. When you have many people spelling 'esports' as 'E-sports' or 'eSports' or 'Esports' (capitalizing 'e' all the time), it creates the idea that the 'e' in esports is a separate alien thing. It also distances esports as not a real sport, since the 'e' is constantly not aligned with the rest of the word 'sports'. According to different articles, I shall link below the name 'esports' should be spelt as such 'esports' Why should it be spelt like that? To begin with, grammatical accuracy, we don't spell email as 'E-mail' or 'eMail' or 'Email' (capitalizing 'e' all the time). Secondly and arguably most importantly legitimacy. With one fully accepted spelling of 'esports' it breeds legitimacy to the industry and reinforces the fact that esports is a sport unique but just like any other out there. So in conclusion, yes it is a pet peeve to me when esports is spelt any other way, (I wouldn't hold it against you though 😁) though I would like a world where there aren't multiple spelling of esports out there but rather one universal spelling. There’s a lot of hype currently surrounding the Olympic Esports Games (OEG), and honestly, I cannot understand the excitement from the esports industry folks about it. To me, it doesn’t change anything for the industry as OEG doesn’t bring any tangible value (except for the possibility of employing another thousand widely unknown "wise talking heads" and "esports experts" as well as draining money from local governments and municipalities). There’s simply no place for yet another Esports World Championship when we already have dozens (EWC, IESF/GEF, LoL Worlds, CS / R6 / RL, CoD Majors, Dota 2 The International, PUBG Mobile, ML:BB, Evo, etc. and many more). The professional esports calendar is oversaturated, and all these events must battle not only for participants among the pros but also for viewership. Despite all attempts, national tournaments like IESF/GEF struggle hard in terms of professionalism and participation. Pros aren’t interested in participating, and viewers don’t tune in to watch unknown esports bros fighting for mediocre prize money when there’s an EWC or another Major event just around the corner. What would OEG change drastically here? Not much, even if it absorbs the current IESF/GEF structure to become the one and only inter-nations championship, infused with that sweet riyals to boost prize money and ensure decent competitive integrity (with semi-pros and pros treating OEG as something important, not just a money-farm event). Not to mention potential problems with IP rights, licensing, the list of games, and so on. So, for me, it’s utterly surprising to read a ton of praising comments from the community, who should know how the industry really works. Luckily, I am noticing a good number of valid points and opinions from people with a proven professional record and skill set within the industry. Personally, for me, reading all these comments praising OEG is like having an "esports consultant" test, revealing the true competence (or total lack of it) of the poster.
