What the Hull’s happening with Chapman Street Bridge? 🤔 In case you don’t know, this iconic structure, also known as Sculcoates Bridge, dates back to 1874, making it Hull’s oldest bridge. Closed to vehicles since April 2020 due to safety concerns, it’s been a long road to restoration for this Grade II-listed swing bridge. Hull City Council appointed an engineering consultant for this complex project back in 2022, with structural surveys and design work taking place to determine the best approach for restoring the bridge’s historic character. With a budget of £6.5 million, the redevelopment is designed to repair and preserve the bridge and extend its lifespan by 50 years. The concept design phase wrapped up in September 2023, with the detailed design and site works to follow. While there’s no definite reopening date, completion is projected for late 2025. The Falkirk Wheel: Scotland's Spinning Engineering Marvel At basesite, we celebrate the ingenious feats of engineering that solve complex problems with elegant solutions. Today's #FridayEngineeringFeat highlights the truly brilliant Falkirk Wheel in Scotland. This isn't your average Ferris wheel. The Falkirk Wheel is the world's only rotating boat lift, connecting two canals at different heights. It rotates a full 180 degrees, lifting canal boats 115 feet between the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal. The key challenge the engineers set out to solve was how to connect waterways at different elevations.  It would have been possible to build a series of canal locks, but this would have been slow and expensive.  Instead, the engineers looked to the past and channeled (no pun intended) the spirit of Archimedes to design the Falkirk Wheel.   This engineered masterpiece took 1,000 construction workers 3 years to build, using 15,000 bolts and 1,200 tons of steel.  Scotland's spinning engineering marvel is a thing of beauty and a guaranteed head-turner for any visitor. 🎡 🚀 #engineering #innovation #Scotland #boating #canals #technology #FalkirkWheel #Design #construction #MechanicalEngineering #ModernEngineering

Here's some lesser-known facts about the iconic structure. 🛠 Bridging the Impossible : Back in the early 1900s, the idea of building a bridge across the Golden Gate Strait seemed like an impossible dream. The area faced strong tides, powerful winds, and thick fog, and sat close to the San Andreas Fault, all making construction incredibly tough. 🤔 Strauss’ Vision : Joseph Strauss, who graduated in civil engineering from the University of Cincinnati, had a passion for designing bridges. His senior thesis proposed a bold idea: a rail bridge spanning the Bering Strait, showing his innovative spirit. Initially, Strauss planned a hybrid bridge for the Golden Gate, mixing cantilever and suspension designs, before settling on a suspension bridge. Construction kicked off on January 5, 1933, wrapping up in 1937. 🔸 Accidentally Orange : The bridge's iconic color, International Orange, started simply as a protective primer for the steel against the harsh weather.
