🌍 As #COP16 is well underway in Cali, Colombia, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (F.A.Z.) published an interview with our Executive Director Stefanie Lang. F.A.Z.’s Dr. Katja Gelinsky LL.M. sat down with Stefanie to discuss what is at stake at this summit, as well as the unique contribution LLF makes to global nature conservation. Here are our key takeaways: 🌿 Urgent Need for Funding in Biodiversity Hotspots: There is a significant financial gap in conservation efforts, particularly in biodiversity-rich regions of the Global South like Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These biodiversity hot spots are essentially "biodiversity banks," essential for the preservation and regeneration of ecosystems. 🌿 LLF's Role in Protecting Biodiversity and Climate: With biodiversity loss threatening both ecosystems and the global economy, the Legacy Landscape Fund (LLF) offers a proven, high-impact funding model. LLF is already supporting 15 key landscapes across Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Read my interview in Die Zeit: "Im Moment lohnt sich nur die Plünderung der Natur" - "Today - plundering pays" We are making five points: ◾ Valuing Nature: Whilst nature has intrinsic, spiritual and cultural value, it also has economic value. Today, that economic value builds on extractive activities. We gain from nature destruction, not from conversation. That must, and can change. ◾ Nature as Critical Infrastructure: We liken nature to essential infrastructure, stating that, like roads or railways, ecosystems need ongoing maintenance and expansion investment to prevent degradation, such as erosion, salinization, and deforestation. ◾ Reversal of incentives: We emphasize the need for a financial system that rewards businesses for protecting ecosystems through access to critical ecosystem services, lower capital & insurance costs and an extended license to operate. ◾ The role of NatureFinTech: A new generation of technology companies helps us to quantify ecosystem health (e.g., water retention, carbon storage) and understand the condition of nature and to reward land stewards for providing natural capital. ◾ The Biodiversity Convention as an opportunity: In this week's global Biodiversity summit (COP16) in Cali, a growing number community of central bankers, finacial ministers, asset managers, business leaders, economists and work with scientists and nature activists to find ways "to bring nature on our collective balance sheet" - and to ensure it is amply available for generations to come.

Part 1: The Generation Forest (Panama) The Generation Forest, a visionary reforestation project, is tackling the dual challenges of restoring rainforests and creating sustainable economic models that benefit both nature and people. The goal is not just to plant trees but to create biodiverse forests that can sequester carbon, protect wildlife, and support local communities. In most cases, these forests are planted on former cattle ranches, which might be the best deal for everyone. Remember, in Latin America, cattle farming is the main cause of deforestation. Thus, the Generation Forest purchases the land from local cattle farmers and includes remaining forest patches into their plantations. Especially, these last bits of original forest help naturally the fast recovery of fauna and flora within the area.   As investors (not donors), you can fund the planting and management of forests, creating a sustainable cycle of ecological and economic benefits. By focusing on native and diverse tree species, these forests mimic natural ecosystems, offering greater resilience against climate threats and fostering habitats for endangered species. ⚠️❗ Targeted approach to protect forests and other valuable ecosystems urgently needed. 🌳 The fight against deforestation in Brazil brings mixed news: A remarkable 60% decrease in the Amazon rainforest's deforestation rates signals progress for climate and biodiversity. However, the neighbouring Cerrado savanna, a unique ecosystem in its own right, is under increasing threat, facing a 40% surge in deforestation, largely driven by soya cultivation. Conversations with small farmers reveal the struggle against the expansion of agricultural areas, while conservationists tirelessly work to safeguard the Cerrado's biodiversity. 🦜Despite the European Union's efforts to combat deforestation through the EUDR, these measures are not sufficient to protect ecosystems like the Cerrado. 🌍 This scenario shows: 1) regulations and strict enforcement work, as deforestation-rates go down since the new Brazilian government is in power 2) the necessity for more robust EU interventions in preserving all valuable ecosystems from which we source raw materials combined with a pragmatic and targeted implementation of the EUDR is needed. While the EUDR marks a commendable initial step, a more targeted approach is required. The scope of the regulation must be expanded to include other critical ecosystems and focus on these high-risk areas, while at the same time simplify bureaucracy for regions at lower risk. 3) massive support and usage of European soya is needed. The EU is hugely dependent on soya imports from high-risk regions. Thrilled to share with you our new report on Financing of Nature-based Solutions in Southeast Asia. This study was funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Government as part of the project "Taking Deforestation out of Bank Portfolios in Emerging Markets". We take this opportunity to thank IKI for making this work possible. Five WWF offices contributed to this study (Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore) along with authors Aqeela S., Chris Moore and Jim Stephenson from Terranomics as consultants. Existing economic data and socio-economic studies on the conservation and social aspects of the projects were provided by the respective WWF teams. This was supplemented by interviews with various stakeholders and partners as well as desktop research.
