In today's digital age, social media platforms have become powerful tools for fostering community, sharing information, and engaging in meaningful discussions. While often associated with superficial interactions and viral trends, these platforms can also serve as valuable spaces for promoting participatory democracy. By joining the right social media groups, individuals can actively engage in conversations on important issues, contribute to decision-making processes, and ultimately shape the future of their communities.

Community managers stand at the frontlines of democracy during election cycles. 🛡️ Their role? More critical than you might think because democracy is built on informed discussions. ☝️ Community managers use the power to shape narratives, control misinformation, and foster a culture of respectful conversation. Imagine a world where every comment section becomes a space for constructive debate rather than a battleground of insults. But how do they do it? ✅ Fighting Misinformation: They tirelessly correct false info, stopping harmful narratives in their tracks. ✅ Boosting Diverse Opinions: They ensure all voices are heard, preventing the echo chambers that divide us. ✅ Promoting Respectful Exchanges: With clear rules, they foster spaces where everyone can debate constructively. Social media community managers keep the very principles of democracy ticking: open dialogue, truth, and mutual respect. And thank you all for doing so because sometimes it is extremely hard! 🙏 #elvai #politicalmarketing #contentmoderation

What does it mean to be an informed public? How are misinformation campaigns being addressed across the globe? The Institute for Rebooting Social Media welcomes Johan Farkas to discuss contemporary struggles over how we define what’s true and what’s false, based on the 2nd edition of Post-Truth, Fake News and Democracy: Mapping the Politics of Falsehood. The conversation will explore how fake news has impacted historic events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and present both a critique of prominent current solutions to the spread of disinformation as well as potential alternatives. This event will be fully virtual and moderated by Applied Social Media Lab Senior Director Jonathan Bellack.

Our democracy is at stake. It keeps many of us awake at night. If you too care about democracy, mark your calendars for June 3, 2024! Peggy O’Neal of Unite for Democracy is hosting "Building a Community that Stands for Democracy" on Zoom. Engage in interactive sessions, experiential learning, and connect with others who care as much as you do. The way we support preserving democracy is for people to know what is at stake and to create the future we want. We recognize that voting and getting out the vote are extremely important, and that alone will not address what is causing the challenges we have today. We must get to the root of our issues and allow that to inspire the creation of new ways of living as a representative democracy. These are ideas and a consciousness whose time has come. One way you can help spread the words so all have the opportunity to attend one of our Unite for Democracy events. Then, invite 5 people to one of the events so we have 5 more people involved in creating the country we want and need. Registration is in the first comment. #UniteForDemocracy #InteractiveEvent #CommunityEngagement #DemocracyIsUs

We're sharing some key resources for anyone reporting on the election or interested in a fair, free, and safe democratic process all month long. Make sure you follow Collective Flow Consulting to stay informed, prepared, resourced and ready for the shenanigans that lie ahead. These resources are valuable to everyone, but especially helpful if you're a writer, creator, social entrepreneur, or culture critic. Yesterday we shared the Committee to Protect Journalists LinkedIn Newsletter and the solid resources within. Today we're highlighting Hearken, Inc from the ineffable brain of Jennifer Brandel. Hearken is a powerful force in developing tools for independent media and they have great stuff on how to build trust with readers and platforms for community news. They offer training on reporting during elections and toolkits on democracy. Learn more about them via link in comments. And check out this amazing toolkit—Democracy SOS they collabed on. You can download the 24 page "Covering Elections and Voting in 2024: A Media Guide" free, no email required. --- Do you have a resource for creators and journalists we should know about? We'd love to share it, and give you a shout out. Let us know down below. 📰🚨🗳️ #CitizenJournalist #FreePress #SpreadTruth #Toolkits ftw #DemocracyNow #NewMedia
